Marvi Slathia, a resident of Hatli Morh, Jammu, who fought with her parents a month ago for continuing study further, is facing a new problem. Now, when she is studying in BA I in Government Women College, Gandhi Nagar, and is staying in a private hostel with the help of students groups, Garib Das, SSP, Kathua, has written to the principal of the college that if anything happens to the girl, 10 persons (whose names are mentioned in the letter) who are supporting her, shall be held responsible.
The Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA) expressed concern over the status of women in the state. The president of JURSEA, Vikas Sharma told that the attitude shown by the authorities over Marvi’s case shows that still women need to fight for their rights.
“A letter has been issued by SSP Kathua to the Principle of Gandhi Nagar Women College, claming that the girl has been missing since 21.08.2009 from her home and also it is mentioned that at present she is residing in Jammu without her parents consent. In case of any mishappening with Marvi Salathia the people Vikas Sharma (President JURSEA), Rahul Verma (President PSA), Rajnish, Akshay, Anshu, Vinod, Zakir, Rajni and Shakir along with the institution will be responsible”, adding further Vikas said that this will pose problem for the girl to carry out her studies smoothly.”
Meanwhile, Vikas also urged the concerned authorities and Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah to look into the matter for the girls’ sake.
SSP Kathua, Garib Das while speaking over the matter informed that we have issued the letter for the safety of the girl and it has been misinterpreted. “I will favour the girls study and the letter has been issued just for her safety as she is studying outside without her parents consent”, SSP added.
Meanwhile, the SSP said since her mother had filed a missing report about her daughter, and the girl refused to come home, they had cautioned people supporting her cause that if she was pushed into illegal and immoral activities, these people would be held responsible. He added that the police was not harassing her and her supporters.
“It is just for the sake that she should not get involve in some anti social activities and I hope that the college authorities will take it in a positive sense”, SSP said.
On asking the Gandhi Nagar Women College Principle, Nalini Kohli she said, “I haven’t received any such letter yet.”
