| Services hit in hospitals as doctors go on strike | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 5: An indefinite strike of doctors demanding fulfillment of their long-standing demands, started in theJammu region here today. Under the banner of Doctors Joint Action Committee (DJAC) an indefinite strike was announced yesterday by the junior doctors alleging state government’s ignorant attitude towards them. ‘’The members of the Committee had condemned the government’s ignorant attitude towards their demands,’’ one of the members told . They further added that the strike would be observed in all the health institutions of the region. ‘’The Government has assured us that the demands will be met by September 30 but nothing was done on ground,’’ the doctors said adding that the government’s attitude forced them to adopt the path of agitation. Meanwhile, hundreds of patients suffered on the first day of the strike as junior doctors did not joined duties in various medical institutions including the Government Medical College Jammu. The doctor's demands included rationalisation of use of apron by the hospital staff, separate colour of aprons for different staff groups, changing of pay band from Pay Band 2 to 3, law to make assault on health personnel a non-bailable offence, integration of PG stipend with that of House Surgeons/ Assistant Surgeons and payment of arrears from January 1, 2006, one grade pay higher for MBBS doctors than 10+2 lecturers, BUMS, BAMS, time bound promotion of doctors at 5, 10 and 15 years. Meanwhile, maintaining his tough posture, Medical Education Minister R S Chib has again warned junior doctors of strict action if they would not ‘shun the course of confrontation’. Minister said that government had an ‘unwritten’ agreement with representatives of doctors to look into their demand of removing pay anomalies in the salaries before Darbar move. He said the agreement was reached at a meeting between the representatives and government represented by Finance Minister, Minister for Health MOS health and him, where it was decided that the Pay Anomaly Committee would analyze the demand and submit its report before Darbar Move. Chib blamed the doctors of violating the agreement and threatened that in case they (Doctors) continued to disrupt the working in hospitals, government would be forced to take stringent action to the extent of marking their absence from duty as ‘break in service’. Meanwhile, talking to Early Times Convener Doctors’ Joint Action Committee Dr. Satvinder Singh said that they would not call off the strike what may come. He said instead of coming up with a statement to resolve the matter, government was applying pressure tactics. He said the committee was not going to succumb to such pressure tactics.
