| Crop insurance must for damage claims | | | Early Times Report Jammu, October 6 The state government has decided to issue a notification on October 14 on the introduction of crop insurance scheme at the village level in Jammu and Kashmir. Stating this the Minister for Agriculture, G H Mir, today said that "we have decided to bringing the entire Rabi crop under crop insurance cover so that farmers received due compensations in case their crops were damaged owing to the vagaries of weather." Mir said that crop insurance should have been introduced in Jammu and Kashmir on a priority basis because over the years the Government, state and the central, had to pay huge sums of money as compensation to those farmers whose crops were damaged either due to natural calamities. He said past records have revealed that farmers have suffered losses every year on account of weather elated problems. And thus the government has decided that only those farmers were entitled to compensation whose 50 per cent and above crops were damaged owing to weather related problems. In reply to a question Mir said that under crop insurance scheme farmers with even 20 per cent losses would be entitled to compensation. Asked whether crop insurance was compulsory the Minister said "It is not compulsory but it is essential." Explaining it he said that those farmers who refuse to cover their crops under insurance scheme and suffer losses owing to weather vagaries would not be given any compensation by the Government even if they had suffered 50 per damage to their crops.
