| PMRP may be get two-year extension | | Prime Minister likely to make announcement during his J&K visit | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 6: The visiting high level central team headed by Cabinet Secretary K Chandrashekhar is reported to have agreed to recommend a two-year extension in the Rs 30,000 Crore Prime Minister’s Reconstruction package allowing Jammu and Kashmir to make use of the unspent funds. Sources said that the state government made a strong case for allowing the use of funds as the present government wanted a chance. The central team is learnt to have agreed to the proposal but an announcement to this effect was not made. Reliable sources in the state administration told Early Times that even state government was advised against making this ‘decision’ public as the announcement was likely to be made at highest political level. When asked to elaborate, sources said that after final discussions on state government’s plea in New Delhi, the announcement on extension of programme may be made by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his upcoming visit to Jammu and Kashmir later this month. Meanwhile, the high level team today packed up its two-day visit after having a brainstorming session with the administrative secretaries and Deputy Commissioners of all districts in the state. The Deputy Commissioners in the meeting highlighted achievements both registered in their respective districts and problems confronting the people. The sectors discussed in the meeting include land acquisition for various development projects, four laning of Jammu-Srinagar highway, R&B, Water supply, NREGA, Education, PMRP, JNNRUM, development of infrastructure etc. Chandrashekhar described the Deputy Commissioners as main driving force for speeding up the work on all the development projects going on in the state in various sectors. He impressed upon them to ensure tangible and visible change in the state so that the fruits of development reach to the common people as also to the gross root level. He exhorted upon the Deputy Commissioners to also maintain a close rapport with the people and reach to the people living in remote and far-flung areas to get their feedback with regard to the development and welfare schemes launched in the state both in central and state sector. Earlier, welcoming the central team the Chief Secretary Mr. S. S. Kapur expressed his gratitude for evincing a positive appreciation of the demands and issues raised by the officers of the state during two day meeting. He assured the team on behalf of the state administration that all out efforts would be made to achieve the targets fixed for various schemes.
