| Chib inaugurates workshop at SKIMS | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 07- Minister for Medical Education, Technical Education and Youth Services and Sports, Mr. R. S. Chib has called upon medical professionals to work hard for eradication of dreaded tuberculosis disease from the face of the blue planet. The Minister was addressing delegates from different medical colleges of the country, resource persons, ex-directors, principals, and students after inaugurating a two-day, 7th Zonal Task Force Workshop-cum-CME, North zone for involvement of medical colleges in Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura Auditorium today. Mr. Chib said that of late there has been a global awakening in the field of tuberculosis and WHO has recommended a scientifically proved, highly effective and economic sure-cure for this disease, popularly called ‘directly observed treatment short course therapy, (DOTS). He said Tuberculosis Research Centre (TRC) Chenai and National Tuberculosis Institute (NTI) Bangalore had already advocated role of domiciliary treatment under direct observation and importance of case detection by direct microscopy. Emphasizing for strict implementation of guidelines issued by policy makers and programme managers, Mr. Chib said that the aim in the long run should be to see a TB free world. Director, SKIMS, Prof. Abdul Hamid Zargar, Dean Medical Faculty and organizing Secretary Prof. Imtiyaz Ali, Director, NTI Bangalore, Dr. Prahlad Kumar, Director IRS, New Delhi, Dr. D. Behra, and Chairman North Zone Task Force, Dr. S. K. Jindal, Ex-Director, SKIMS Prof. M. S. Kharoo and Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din also participated in the deliberations of the workshop. Dr. Zargar while speaking about the latest advancements in the field of TB said that Revised National TB Control Programme (RNTCP) is showing encouraging results. He said medical colleges have to extend scientific benefits to the patients suffering from TB and have to relieve the community from this dreadful disease. Prof. Imtiyaz Ali urged upon bringing these programmes close to the common masses by extension education programmes.
