| Searches, frisking back in Srinagar after militant attack | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 7 : Security forces today launched random searches and frisking operations in the city and its outskirts after the surprise militant hand grenade attack yesterday at historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of Srinagar, in which two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were injured. Holding automatic weapons and wearing bulletproof jackets, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) remained deployed after every ten feet, guarding the streets on both sides of the roads in the civil lines. All the vehicles passing through Lal Chowk were being searched and passengers frisked before being allowed to move towards their respective destinations. ''Get down all male members from the vehicle,'' said a security force personnel to passengers who had come from a downtown area at near Gantha Ghar Lal Chowk. A correspondent saw scooterists, motorcyclists, people travelling in their own vehicles and commerical vehicles being frisked and their identity cards checked by the security forces. ''Though, there is no specific information about any militant plan to carry out attack, but we do not want to take any chance,'' said a security force personnel. Yesterday's grenade attack in Lal Chowk area was a first after several years though militants last month had killed two police and a CRPF personnel at Batmaloo and Residency Road. Official sources said the attack took security forces by surprise. Similar search of vehicles and frisking of pedestrains and passengers was also witnessed at Budshah Chowk, the road leading to Civil Secretariat, seat of the government and Polo View. Vehicles coming from north Kashmir, particularly from the frontier areas, were also being searched and passengers frisked at Parimpora bypass. This, official sources said, was being done to foil any militant attempt to smuggle in arms and ammunition into the city.
