| A day for eldersvv | | Galaxy of intellectuals, senior citizens, reputed personalities of past assemble at SKICC | | Srinagar, October 01 A galaxy of retired persons, old intellectuals, senior citizens and persons of repute assembled at SKICC here today at a function organized by HelpAge India and Global Green Peace Kashmir in collaboration with Departments of Information and Public Relations and Social Welfare to celebrate 16th International Day for Older Persons. Addressing on the occasion, Secretary Social Welfare Dr. Asgar Samoon said that we have to understand our responsibilities towards our elderly persons and try to solve their problems being confronted during their oldage. He stressed upon the need for setting up of elders’ forum to deliberate upon the problems of senior citizens and suggest measures for solution thereof. He said that NGOs and social activists also have a greater role to play in creating awareness about the problems of elderly persons and finding solutions of these. Director Information Khawaja Farooq Ranzu while addressing said that this function was first of its kind in the valley. He said that responsible persons should play vital role in highlighting the works and experience of our living old generation. It was pointed out that old people face a lot of inconvenience and problems and there should be organized forum to come forward for redressal of their genuine grievances. He said that the day is being celebrated at international level, which provides an opportunity for meeting of generations, adding that the need of the day is to understand the relations. He enjoined upon the younger generation to respect the elders and benefit optimally from their varied and rich experience. He said that we have to organize such programmes to interact with our senior citizens. Director Social Welfare Mrs. Dilshada Khan said that senior citizens do not have only financial difficulties but many times they feel loneliness with change in life style of people and breaking up of joint families into nuclear families. She said that the senior citizens should be afforded ample opportunities of interaction and sharing their experiences so that they could lead a life of contentment and enrich the society. A senior journalist Mr. Shujat Bukhari while throwing light on the importance of the day lauded the organizers for organizing the function. He suggested for conducting a survey to build up a database about the elderly persons in the state detailing their problems and formulating a comprehensive roadmap for redress thereof. Representative of HelpAge India Mr. P. Rajan highlighted the activities of the organization and said that it is country’s leading voluntary organization working for older people since long. He said it has extended financial support to more than 3000 projects worth Rs 200 crore in implementing various age-care services like OldAge Homes, Day Care Centers, Ophathlmic Care, Adopt A Grand Programme and livelihood support. Director Global Green Peace Kashmir Mr. Ishrat and several prominent senior citizens also spoke on the occasion. They appreciated the organizers for holding such a function for the first time in the state focusing on the problems of senior citizens and find their solutions. Later, an Iftar party was given to the people present of the occasion. |
