| Wani demands free rations to drought affected people | | | Early Times Report Doda, Oct 7- Expressing his serious concern over the deteriorating situation prevailing in Doda district due to drought resulting into total crop failure, the former Minister and sitting MLA from Doda Abdul Majid Wani has urged the government to constitute a high level committee to assess the losses suffered by the farmers. The MLA conducted an extensive tour of Shiva, Sohada, Kahlot, Rai, Alal Bani in Doda constituency to take stock of the situation arising out of dry spell and loss of crops. He also inspected Shiva- Alal Bani road and observed some cracks in few houses due to the construction of this road. He instructed the executing agencies for necessary protection works for safety of these houses. Wani requested the Chief Minister to announce, as an interim relief, free distribution of ration in villages of Doda district for one year. He was informed by the public about the acute shortage of drinking water in Shiva, Sohada, Kahlot, Rai, Alal Bani areas. He was told that all sources have dried up and the PHE department was supplying drinking water through a lone tanker twice a week. Praising state government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for taking a number of initiatives to streamline and affecting reforms in the public distribution system, Wani sought cooperation of people for keeping an eye over the department in preventing pilferage of food grains and K-oil.
