| 6 ultras killed, hunt for 9 others | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 7: Six hardcore militants were killed by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir and a major tragedy averted with detection of two powerful IEDs in Rajouri district 500 kilometres from here on Wednesday. Acting on a tip off, police assisted by army cordoned Satkoji and Behnipora forests near Zachaldara in Kupwara, 80 kilometres from here this morning. The militants hiding in the forest opened fire at the joint search party and in the ensuing encounter, three militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed, the police spokesman said. One of the slain militants has been identified as Abu Hamza, a top LeT militant, he said and added that a Hizbul Mujahideen militant identified as Abdul Majid Bhat alias "Jamshed" was killed in a gunfight with security forces at Trikanjan near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Baramulla district, 90 kilometres from here, today. Security forces resumed operation this morning to flush out militants hiding in Khrew forests, 20 kilometres from here in Pulwama district and recovered body of a militant, a defence spokesman said. The gunbattle broke out yesterday, when security forces launched an operation in the area in which two security personnel were injured. The operation was suspended last evening due to darkness after which security forces sealed all exit points to prevent escape of hiding militants. As the day broke, security forces resumed the operation and body of a militant was recovered, the spokesman said, adding that the operation was still going on when reports last came in. Another dreaded Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Javed Iqbal alias "Matin" was killed in a gunfight with security forces at Dumli Top in Chenani area of Udhampur district, the spokesman said. An AK assault rifle, a magazine, 10 rounds, a binocular and a wireless set were recovered from the slain militant. Iqbal, a resident of Dadni village of Doda district, was active for the past several years, the spokesman said. He said that a major tragedy was averted with timely detection of two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), weighing about five kilograms, at Bawali Itian Dera Gali in Thanamandi in Rajouri district this morning. The IEDs were planted by militants on the busy Rajouri-Poonch Road and were detected by the joint party of Army and Police, the spokesman said. In another operation, security forces recovered an AK magazine, 40 rounds, an Insas rifle magazine with 21 rounds, 47 Pika rounds, a hand grenade and 10 pencil cells from a cattle shed at Mathori in Doda district, the spokesman said. Meanwhile, a red alert has been sounded across in Jammu and Kashmir for the nine or ten militants engaging security forces in forests near the Pampore region of the state. The Army has launched a massive hunt for the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operatives. According to security forces one of the ten militants has been killed and a search is on for the nine others.
