Akhnoor to be developed as Model Town: Sham

JAMMU, OCTOBER 08 – Maintaining that Akhnoor town remained neglected by the previous regimes and did not receive due attention on development sector, Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma said that the present government would develop Akhnoor town as a model town and will see an unprecedented change in every sphere.

This was stated by Mr. Sham Lal Sharma today while addressing a largely attended public meeting at Akhnoor town.

To improve the basic infrastructure in different sectors, the Minister said that work over Rs. 200 crore are in progress in Akhnoor constituency, which include road projects, bridges, PHE schemes etc. He said that funds are no constraints and officers have been asked to formulate some new projects as per the requirements of people on priority.

Seeking people’s cooperation in implementing all the schemes, Mr. Sharma asked the locals to personally monitor the development works in their areas and ensure that works are executed as per the specifications by using quality material so that the assets created by the government serve their purpose. He said that government’s job is to arrange funds; it is duty of the people to see that these are utilized judiciously for the purpose for which the funds are earmarked. He asked them to be vigilant and keep close liaison with the officers for timely completion of the schemes.

The Minister inspected the development works in Akhnoor town and asked the officers to complete the projects within stipulated time frame. He stressed for maintaining quality of work as per norms. He also visited Sub-District Hospital, Akhnoor and took stock of the on-going renovation work of the hospital building.

To overcome the scarcity of drinking water in the Kandi belt of Akhnoor constituency, Mr. Sharma said that government has procured a special heavy drilling machine which is able to dig up to 12000 feet deep. With the procurement of this machine, the department will be able to dig tube wells even in odd areas. He said that government is making all out efforts to tap water resources for drinking and irrigational purposes, for which the micro check dams and other water harvesting technologies will be utilized, the Minister added.

To give boost to the sports activities in Akhnoor area, the government will spend Rs. 1.50 crore for the development of stadiums during the current financial year.

In order to provide maximum benefits to the people who are living Below Poverty Line (BPL), but due to some reasons they are not in the BPL list, the Minister said that government has already decided to conduct fresh survey to accommodate all the deserving beneficiaries. He asked the officers to do the exercise with utmost care so that no deserving person is left out. He asked the officers to seek cooperation from the village Numberdars/Chowkidars and party workers. He assured that all deserving people will get the benefits of Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) and old age pension etc.

The Minister also announced construction of a High Tech park on the Jammu-Akhnoor road near Batehra. He said thousands of tourists visit Akhnoor area daily and this facility is badly needed. He issued instructions to the Director Floriculture, Jammu to formulate a project for the construction of a park with all recreational facilities.

Deputations of various areas also called on the Minister and put forth their demands. The Minister gave a patient hearing to the deputationists and issued on-the-spot instructions to the concerned for appropriate action.

Mr Sharma later inaugurated digging of a tube-well at Akhnoor. The tube well will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs. 22 lakh and its supplies would be made to Ward No. 13 and some areas of Sungal. This was a long pending demand of the locals.

Director Horticulture, Jammu, Mr. J.L.Sharma, Director Floriculture, Jammu, Mr. K.K.Sharma, SDM, Akhnoor, Mr. Ashok Sharma, S.P.Rural, Mr. Mohan Lal and all sectoral officers were present on the occasion.
