| Territorial Army celebrates Diamond Jubilee year of Raising | | | Early Times Report Udhampur, Oct 9- Territorial Army units in Northern Command celebrate Diamond Jubilee year of their raising here today. The history of Territorial Army can be traced back to the year 1897 when it was raised as volunteers who were recruited from amongst Europeans and Anglo Indians. On attaining Independence, the Territorial Army Act 1948 was promulgated, legislating Territorial Army as it exists today. The Territorial Army has expanded now to more than fifty Infantry Battalions and there are sizeable number of persons from Jammu and Kashmir enrolled into Territorial Army and rendering yeomen service in defence of the State. Every Territorial person is twice a citizen, once when he does his ordinary job and the second time when he dons his uniform and plays his part in defence of the Nation. There are Railway, Oil, General Hospital and Ecological Battalions besides the normal Territorial Army Infantry units. On the auspicious occasion the Defence Minister, Chief of Army Staff, Army Commander Northern Command and Additional Director General Territorial Army have greeted all ranks of the Territorial Army and sent them complementary messages.
