| Jammu legislators to share rooms with their colleagues after they failed to get Govt. accommodation in safe areas in Srinagar | | | Jammu,: After having failed to get a Government accommodation in a safe area in Srinagar majority of legislators belonging to the Jammu region have preferred to stay put in the winter capital despite the fact that the offices had opened in the summer capital in the first week of May. Between May and June end legislators from Jammu did not visit Srinagar because they had not been allotted rooms in the MLA hostel. The Government could not allot any room in the legislators’ hostel because all the rooms were occupied.Later,as a result of Chief Minister’s intervention the Estates Department allotted houses for some legislators in Srinagar. However, these legislators refused to occupy those houses on the plea that they were located in unsafe areas. Since the legislators are to attend the Assembly session, beginning in Srinagar from July 28,several legislators, including those belonging to the congress, have decided to share lodging with fellow MLAs who had been allotted houses in areas which have adequate security cover. Two legislators told Kashmir Independent Press in Jammu on Friday "we will share rooms with one MLA belonging to the PDP till the Assembly session was over." Another legislator said "possibly our presence in Srinagar is not required by men who matter in the ruling coalition." He explained "what for we are supposed to be in Srinagar when our entry to the civil secretariat is barred till 3 P.M. ?" Yet other MLAs were critical of the Government decision under which no minister or senior bureaucrat is supposed to entertain "our recommendations." He said "we have become redundant." These MLAs cautioned the Chief Minister against cutting the roots of the congress in the state by making peoples’ representatives mute spectators. |
