| Seminar on ethical journalism in the backdrop of terrorism held | | | Early Times Report JAMMU: A seminar on the “contemporary journalistic demeanor vis-à-vis terrorism” was organised by Languages Club, Govt College for Women, Parade to observe 75th birth anniversary of Dainik Jagran’s founder editor and Rajya Sabha MP Narinder Mohan here today. Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, BJP Legislative leader of opposition and MLA was the chief guest on the occasion while Savitri Sharma, Principal GCW, parade presided over. The speakers on the occasion were luminaries drawn from diverse fields but having an aptitude in journalistic skills to deliver their respective thoughts over the emergence of the global perspective in the backdrop of terrorism. To start with, the Deputy Editor Hindustan Times Dr Arun Joshi while communicating his beliefs over the terrorism affecting the journalistic pursuits of the present genre in the field stressed on the need for emphasize on questioning the system in a comprehensive manner so that the truth reaches the masses in most apparent way. “The basic ideology of journalism is to stand upright to the political, social, economical and even the terror aspect of a country so that truthful and transparent news gets disseminated among the reader,” said Dr. Arun Joshi. He also elaborated on the basics of terrorism getting nurtured through the milieu of the mindset of the harbingers of the terror who corrupt the human feelings and lead humanity into the destructive stratagem. “Journalism of escapism is playing most important role in providing undue advantage to the terrorism that has spread its utility for them as the cover stories thus glorifying the menace in most derogatory way,” said Dr. Joshi while differentiating the role-living of a journalist of 80s as compared to the one of the present genre. IGP(Retd) S S Bijral touched on the issues of journalistic aptitudes in reporting the news events by the electronic media turning much volatile than the actual happening. “ I fail to understand about the need to repeat the terror event on the TV again and again in more hyped way as such reporting should be underplayed and instead the development aspects of the nation be highlighted,” he said. He also narrated on the irresponsible reporting of the media in bringing to fore the names of the witnesses in the terror acts and thus putting their lives on the risk. Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, the chief guest while recapitulating his old association with Narender Mohan, the founder of Dainik Jagran and Rajya Sabha MP said that he was very keen about the security scenario in J&K and the menace of terrorism. “Narender Mohan often asked me about the security situation in Doda and as a member of Defence Committee’ also visited the state,” said Gupta. Prof. Gupta also recalled some anecdotes with the pro-Pakistan Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on the Kashmir’s accession with India and the latter’s negation to admit this in 80s and even in the new millennium also. Ms Raj Jamwal presented the vote of thanks while the occasion culminated with presentation of certificates to the journalism students of GCW besides mementoes to the speakers.
