| 100 Sportspersons from JK to participate in National Games | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, OCTOBER 11: The Jammu and Kashmir Olympic Association is looking forward to send a contingent of about hundred sports persons, including coaches and officials to represent the state in the National Games. . The National Games being hosted by Jharkhand state are starting from November 21. The state has qualified for participating in 8 disciplines including, Athletics, Boxing, Canoeing Kayaking, Fencing, Wrestling Gymnastics, Hand ball and shooting The state Olympic Association has scheduled the selection trails from 3rd week of October to select outstanding players to be followed by 21 Day intensive training and coaching. The Renowned coaches of the state would impart training to the selected sportspersons during coaching camps scheduled to start from October 28. The schedule was discussed here today at a meeting of members of state Olympic Association, officials of Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and representatives of various sports Associations with the Minister for Sports, Youth services, Medical and Technical Education, R S Chib in the chair. Prominent among others who attended the meeting, include president J&K Olympics Association S. Rangil Singh, Director Youth Services and Sports Mr. Dar and other officials of the department. Asserting that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, himself was keen to see Jammu and Kashmir among the front runner states in the field of sports, Mr Chib said that he has already promised to look into the proposal for an integrated project for the development of M A Stadium Jammu and Sheir-e-Kashmir Sports Complex.
Liberal funds, ranging from Rs one crore to 2 crores for developing sports infrastructure by the Chief Minister for the current year, clearly shows that promoting sports is on his priority list, Minister added . He said sanctioning such huge funds for districts under sports head was itself an historical decision.
The State government is participating in the National games since 1981 and its best tally so far was 16 medals including 3 each of Gold and Silver and 10 bronze in the year 2007.
