| No campus yet for 11 new Central Universities | | | NEW DELHI: Eleven of the 16 new Central universities (CU) have started offering courses from makeshift campuses as land has been acquired only by the varsities in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. On Tuesday, the vice-chancellors of 14 of them will make presentations before the HRD minister outlining their vision and the work done so far. In case of the varsity in Himachal Pradesh, the state government wants the campus to be located in Kangra, while Congress leaders R K Dhawan, Ranjana Kumari and others have petitioned HRD minister Kapil Sibal that it should be located at another place. Sources said the reason for this is that Kangra is CM Prem Kumar Dhumal’s stronghold. Due to an agitation in Jammu, HRD ministry had put on hold work in CU in Srinagar. Now that Jammu has also been given a CU, the ministry is likely to give the go ahead for starting courses in both universities. In Bihar, HRD ministry has more or less agreed with state government’s argument for Motihari as the site. Meanwhile, the makeshift campus in Patna has begun a PG course in development studies. In Jharkhand, the government has given a choice between Dhanbad and Ranchi. The temporary campus in Ranchi is offering a five-year integrated PG course in mass communication, business administration, English and mathematics. In Haryana, Mahendragarh has been finalized but the makeshift campus is running in nearby Narnaul. It has conducted entrance test for admission for an integrated MPhil/PhD in English, economics and political science. The Karnataka CU has already got land in Gulbarga. It is currently operating from Gulbarga University.
In TN, land has also been finalized in Tiruvarur, birth place of CM M Karunanidhi and a few PG courses have already started. In Orissa, Koraput is all set to get the CU. In Punjab, the CU, to be located in Bhatinda, has already started functioning from an one old spinning mill leased by the state government. In all likelihood, the CU in Rajasthan will be located in Ajmer. But the temporary campus in Jaipur has started courses in MSc/MA in statistics and MSc in mathematics.
