Govt to amend 142-year-old print media act
10/13/2009 11:58:46 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR: The government will soon amend a 142-year-old law to make it contemporary with the phenomenal growth of the print media in the country.
"Though the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867 has been marginally amended several times between 1870 and 1983, the times have changed and media representatives have also desired to contemporise the Act," Union minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni said.

She was speaking during the inaugural of the All India Editors Conference on Social and Infrastructure issues here.

The Centre has also convened a conference of state information ministers next month in the national capital to discuss different issues related to media industry along with the proposed amendment to the Act.

The new title for the Act will be called the Press and Registration of Publication (PRP) Act, 2009.

"The Preamble of the Act would be modified to insert provisions on FDI including syndication, facsimile and Indian editions of foreign publications," she said.
