| Rahul Gandhi to get out-of-turn promotion | | | SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, JULY 21: Arrangements are being made for Rahul Gandhi's out-of-turn promotion. In plain language, the long wait for his induction as an ofice-bearer of the ruling Congress party will soon be over. Indications available within the party suggest that the stage is set to appoint the young parliamentarian as a general secretary. Party sources said that he has given his nod to the proposal upon his return from abroad. With the monsoon session of Parliament scheduled to begin on Monday, party circles feel that Rahul's mother Sonia Gandhi, who heads the Congress party, will make changes to her secretariat by Sunday, because by the end of session in late August, it would be too late. They point out that Sonia has already started the process of reshuffling her office bearers by revamping the party's media department. The office bearers officially say they are not privy to Rahul's affirmative nod but talk about popular demand in this regard. "This is the proper time for a decision by Rahul Gandhi since there is an overwhelming demand for his induction," party general secretary, Ashok Gehlot said. While the demand for Rahul's induction as an office bearer of the party has been growing, Sonia has left the final decision with her son, who asked for time to make up his mind. Rahul's expected induction as one of the general secretaries would be part of a change Sonia is likely to make by inducting at least one more general secretary and relocating work to the general secretaries and secretaries. Junior Minister without portfolio, Oscar Fernandes, is the other name popular in party circles as a certainty for the general secretary's post. Fernandes is already spending most of his time at the party's central office. Some Union Ministers, such as Ambika Soni, who was a general secretary until being made a Cabinet Minister at the Centre, continues to hold important portfolios. Ambika Soni is still in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Waiting to make changes until the monsoon session of Parliament ends in late August is considered too late, since the Congress party is scheduled to start its campaign in election-bound Uttar Pradesh soon and expects Rahul Gandhi to play the role of a star campaigner. While he will still campaign in Uttar Pradesh, the youth icon of the party would thus not be confined to one State.
