Exuding confidence that the Central government would find solutions to all problems of Jammu and Kashmir, Home Minister P Chidambaram today said that this could be achieved through dialogue with every section of society.
"I want to assure you that the Prime Minister is open to dialogue...We mean what we say...With every section. We will absorb all suggestions and try to come to widely acceptable solutions to all underlying problems within a short period of time," he said. He said that suggestions for solution to all the problems of Jammu and Kashmir should come from the people of the state and the Central government can help in this process.
"The solution to all problems – political, economic and others should come from the people. Centre can help but ultimately you must have the confidence to solve the problems," he said addressing a rally at the Congress headquarters here.
Chidambaram said the "historical and geographical" aspect of the state must be kept in mind before looking for solutions.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to visit the border state later this month.
Claiming there was "tremendous" improvement in the security situation of the state, Chidambaram said the Centre was willing to put its trust in the state police for being the "frontline" force in dealing with the prevailing security issues.
"There has been a tremendous improvement in security situation as the number of militant attacks and casualties have come down. I have convinced the Prime Minister that the state police has to be the frontline while paramilitary and Army will help them from behind," Chidambaram said.
Asking the people of the state to have "faith" in the police, he said the government was willing to hand over the prime responsibility of tackling law and order situation to the State police whenever it was "ready."
Asserting that many incidents in the valley had been blown out of proportion, Chidambaram said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s government had been "tested" by certain "political forces" just like the previous governments were tested.
He expressed hope that the National Conference-Congress coalition government will surpass all the hurdles for the maintenance of peace and the development of the state.
