| CII organises training programme for farmers | | | Early Times Report Srinagar Oct 14 Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) J&K State Council in collaboration with Agriculture Department of Jammu & Kashmir & Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, (SKUAST) Kashmir organized a one day training session for the farmers from Ganderbal and Srinagar district in SKUAST Srinagar today. Aim of the training session was to educate the farmers on the latest farming techniques and agriculture related finance / credit schemes. Apart from the experst from local institutions resource persons from National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (NIAM), Jaipur, Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), New Delhi, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development - NABARD and Chambal Fertilizers, Chandigarh also spoke on this occasion. Anurag Bhatnagar, Director General, National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Jaipur who was chief guest on this occasion appreciated the occasion and said such occasion needs to be organized for sharing latest knowledge and technology. He said that the biggest problem faced by the farmers of Kashmir today is non availability of market linkages. ‘And this problem is compounded by very meager post harvesting infrastructure, he said adding that J&K has the advantage of a varying height differential, this would enable the farmers in the valley to produce winter crops even during summers and market to other states in off season. He assured the farmers full support in marketing their produce across the country. Altaf Andrabi, Deputy Director Agriculture Department, Government of J&K in his address said that one of the major concerns of the agriculture sector was the increase in urbanization by which the state was loosing approximately 8000 hectares of productive land per year. He also said that there was an urgent need to change the cropping pattern to counter the effects of global warming. Dr A R Trag, Director Research, SKUAST Srinagar stressed need of a complementary support from all other stake holders as well. He also said that the problem of limited availability of land could only be negated by increase in per hectare yield. The technical session for the farmers included latest seeds available, fertilizers, improving the farm income through value addition, post harvest preservation and fruits & vegetables processing, orchard management , value addition & fruit exports, vermiculture, organic farming, Agriculture finance & credit schemes & backyard livestock. A success story related to honey production and processing was also discussed. Waseem Trumboo, Chairman CII Kashmir Zone presented the welcome address The session was attended by more than 100 farmers and 20 MBA students of NIAM Jaipur who had specially come to study the agri related problems of marketing in the in the valley.
