Mr. Azad said that before entering into politics, he had become a true follower of Gandhian philosophy. He recalled that 37 years ago Kashmir was chosen as the venue for holding 15-day long programmes in connection with Gandhiji’s birth centenary celebrations at national level. He said the reason for this was that Kashmir during the turmoil period of 1947 in the sub-continent stood as a real symbol of secularism and majority community protected the lives and property of their Hindu brethren which influenced even Gandhiji in stating that amidst darkness of communal frenzy, he saw the ray of light in Kashmir. The Chief Minister said that he was chosen from S. P. He said that keeping in view violence in Lebanon, Iraq and other places, there is a great scope of introducing Gandhian means of non-violence. The Chief Minister said that Gandhiji preferred self-sacrifices by resorting to satyagraha and other such peaceful means but never encouraged any violence even against Britishers.
