SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 19 – The Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra and the Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah have stressed the need for greater synergy between the Agricultural Universities and the extension agencies of the State Government for optimally enhancing agri-production and productivity in the Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions of the State. The Governor and the Chief Minister were addressing the 18th University Council meeting of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Kashmir, here this afternoon. The Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University, stressed the need of extension activities being carried out through composite teams of the Agricultural University and the State Government’s extension agencies; this would also ensure that the research outcomes are translated into improved agricultural practices on the ground and the farming community gets benefited from various technological advances made in this field The Governor mentioned that the quality of teaching and research should be further fine tuned to bring these at par with the international standards so that the students passing out from the SKUAST could compete for good placements in the market. He said that the University should evolve an effective mechanism to monitor and analyze the placement of pass-outs so that the University, based on this feedback, could reorient its courses wherever required. He said that post-harvesting technology has tremendous scope for jobs and, keeping this in view, the varsity should focus on such courses. The Chief Minister, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the University, underlined the need for enhanced linkages between the theoretical knowledge and its practical implementation on ground by taking research from the laboratories to the field for optimally extending the benefits of scientific advancement to the farming community. The Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir, stressed that agricultural trainees should be actively associated with the farmers on ground so that they act as catalysts for transferring technology and research from the lab to the land for giving boost to agriculture and allied sectors in the State. He said that the Agricultural Universities of the State have played an important role in developing appropriate technologies and now it is high time that farmers benefited fully from the gains so far achieved. Mr. Mir said that conducting of research and developing of quality seeds of various crops should be area and climatic zone specific so that agriculture yield is maximized. The Vice Chancellor, SKUAST, K, Prof. Anwar Alam, made a power point presentation, detailing notable achievements made by the University in teaching, research and other fields of activity. He said that a Placement Cell has been set up in the University to facilitate on-campus placement of the students. He said that a Centre of Animal Biotechnology has also been established at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry of the University. The meeting took stock of various research projects and other initiatives taken after the last meeting of the SKUAST, besides discussing other agenda items which included a review of the follow-up action in respect of various decisions taken in the last meeting etc. The meeting was also attended by the Vice Chancellor, SKUAST, Jammu, Dr. B. Mishra, Principal Secretary, Agriculture Production, Mrs. Sonali Kumar, Commissioner/Secretary, Finance, Mr. Sudhanshu Pandey, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Raj Kumar Goyal and the Registrar, SKUAST, K, Dr. M. A. Gora.
