Devise academic courses in sync with job market, Universities told

SRINAGAR, Oct 21: Governor, N. N. Vohra, and the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, have emphasized the need for developing the Kashmir and Jammu Universities as centres of excellence to impart world class education to equip the youth of the State to successfully compete in the national and international job markets. Governor and Chief Minister were addressing the University Council meeting of the University of Kashmir, here today.
Governor, who is the Chancellor of the University, stressed that the focus of introducing new academic courses should relate directly to the existing and emerging job market. He emphasized the need for dynamic monitoring and evaluation of the content of the courses offered vis-à-vis the job opportunities available to those who qualified in such courses. He asked the Vice Chancellor to evolve a mechanism for securing optimum benefits from all specialized courses. He observed that such an approach could help in making these courses optimally responsive to the job market requirements and enable our youth to find profitable placements.
Governor observed that the University would need to ensure high standards of teaching and research, and continuously improve and upgrade them to meet the present and emerging global requirements. This would ensure that the boys and girls of Kashmir were not left behind. He said that building up of the human resource would empower the students to successfully face the competitive world in the years to come.
Governor asked the Vice Chancellor to ensure regular meetings of the Syndicate and the Academic Council of the University to enable timely decisions on various matters.
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the University, said that the Planning Department of the State Government would be the nodal department to identify the projects which could be entrusted to the Universities in Jammu and Kashmir for undertaking required studies, as may be required by the various State Government agencies for formulating policies or preparing project proposals.
The Chief Minister also underlined the need for introducing such courses, as have a high market demand, particularly under the self-financing schemes, to make these viable and sustainable.
Abdullah called for strengthening counseling cells to help the students select the streams for higher education, keeping in view their potential, aptitude, inclination and employability, so that they excel in their chosen fields of studies and be able to find employment.
Referring to the skill development programmes launched by various institutions in the State, the Chief Minister said that there has to be a greater coordination among the two Universities, and the other Universities, to avoid duplication of courses for maximizing gains and better utilization of institutions and infrastructure available in the State.
The Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Abdul Gani Malik, speaking on the occasion, focused on the need for further fine-tuning the examination system to ensure timely conduct of examinations and declaration of results of various classes by the universities. He put forth several suggestions to improve quality of higher education in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, in his presentation, gave details of various achievements of the varsity and its future plan of action. These included laying of international benchmarks in the field of research, initiatives in e-governance under which networking of entire examination wing has been completed, computerization of students’ records and establishing connectivity between the University and 40 colleges, in the first phase. He stated that the North Campus of the University is ready for commissioning.
The meeting was also attended by the Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. Varun Sahni, Commissioner/Secretary, Finance, Mr. Sudhanshu Pandey, Commissioner/Secretary, Health and Medical Education and Incharge Higher Education, Mr. Atal Dulloo, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Raj Kumar Goyal, Registrar, University of Kashmir, Prof. Syed Fayaz Ahmad, and other members of the Council.
