Postal honours for Maharaja Gulab Singh

Jammu, Oct 21: The Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Sachin Pilot today released commemorative postal stamp in memory of Maharaja Gulab Singh, the founder-ruler of Jammu and Kashmir State, at Amar Mahal here today.
Paying tribute to late Maharaja, he said, he is the only recognized ruler in the history of India who extended the geographical boundaries of India. He said his annexation of Ladakh is a tremendous achievement which makes his name immortal in the history of India. He devoted his full energies whole heartedly for all round development of the J&K state.
Welcoming the guest, Dr. Karan Singh the great grandson of late Maharaja, said, releasing the stamp in honour of Maharaja Gulab Singh is a great achievement, and also thanks minister Sachin Pilot who keeps his promise in releasing the stamp.
Dr. Singh on the occasion, said that central university which has been allotted to Jammu be named after this great general. He said famous historian Dr. KM Pannikar writes about the late Maharaja, “When everything is considered, Gulab Singh will appear as one of the few great Indian figures of the 19th century, one who in his ambition even as a youth dreamed of states and kingdoms…….” People at the function, were surprised when Dr. Karan Singh announced that due to some important engagement at Srinagar CM Omar Abdullah and as such is not in a position to attend the function, which was presided over by their close relations.
Talking to media persons Sachin Pilot when asked about ban on prepaid mobile connections in the state he said that he will try to find out the alternative arrangement and it won’t be proper to ban prepaid mobile connection in the state. No doubt security is utmost important for the country but we will try to find out amicable solution. We have at present 34 lakh prepaid mobile connection holders in the state.
Later in the evening, addressing a public meeting Pilot said that centre government is making all out efforts to develop Jammu and Kashmir State as model state in providing all basic amenities to people of three regions particularly communication and Information Technology facilities at their doorsteps.
This was said by the Union Minister while addressing a mammoth gathering at the residence of Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Mr. Raman Bhalla, here this evening.
Pilot said that centre government led by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is making tireless efforts to provide better communication including Internet and broadband facilities to people of Jammu and Kashmir especially far-off areas at par with Kalkata, Rajashthan, Mumbai and Delhi. He said that the centre government has approved Rs. 5500 crore for speedy completion of ongoing projects. He assured full support from centre. He said that the government has also launched number of welfare schemes to uplift the socio-economic condition of the JK weaker sections. He said that centre government has also provided liberal funding for proper rehabilitation of houseless families.
