Dilawar fixes 5-day deadline for restoring flood damaged water supply network in Shopian

Minister for PHE, Irrigation, Flood control, Horticulture and Tourism, Mr. Mohammad Dilawar Mir today ordered for immediate restoration of various irrigation canals in Pulwama and Anantnag districts which have been damaged during the recent flash floods. He fixed a deadline of five days for completing restoration work of Tongri Canal, Sonaman canal, Bunai, Wattoo and Gurmath canals which have badly affected water supply in Shopian and Wachi constituencies. He sanctioned a grant of Rs. 26 lakhs for restoration of these canals with stringent orders that any delay in completing the restoration work would be viewed seriously.
The Minister was speaking at a meeting held here this morning to discuss measures for restoration of drinking water supply in various parts of Shopian and Wachi constituencies, which has been badly affected due to damage caused by floods, putting people of these areas to lot of inconveniencies.
MLA, Kulgam Mr. M. Y. Tarigami, MLA Homeshalibug, Sofi Abdul Gaffar, Commissioner/Secretary PHE, Mr. Mehboob Iqbal, Chief Engineers of PHE, Irrigation and Flood control and concerned district engineers were also present.
The Minister instructed the engineers to identify all such flood damaged irrigation canals which form the feeding source of drinking water so that these could be restored on emergency basis. He asked the concerned MLAs to personally monitor the restoration work on these canals so that immediate relief is provided to the people of about 50 affected villages of these twin constituencies. He asked the Chief Engineer PHE and Chief Engineer Irigation, Kashmir to dove-tail their efforts for this purpose.
The Minister fixed five days time for completing restoration work on Martan Dadi, Sonamah, Bunai canal, Wattoo and Gurmath canals adding that Southern Kashmir should get first priority as these areas have been affected much more due to recent floods in the valley. The Minister also called for formulating exhaustive dredging and widening projects for Doodganga, Jehlem river and flood spill cannels to protect floods in future. “Latest dredging machines should be procured for this purpose, the Minister added.
Responding to the demands put forth by MLA Wachi, the Minister ordered repairs of water regulating gates in Vaishoo Nallah near Homeshalibug.
Mr. Tarigami emphasized the urgency of restoring irrigation canals in Shopian belt adding that these irrigation canals are the feeding sourse for water supply in the areas.
