MIER organizes 2 days national conference on higher education

Two days National Conference on ‘ Improving the Quality of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: Issues, Practices and Assessment’ organized by MIER College of Education in collaboration with ‘ National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore was inaugurated at MIER Jammu today. Abdul Ghani Malik, Minister for Higher Education was the Chief Guest while Dr. M.S.Shyamsunder, Deputy Adviser NAAC Bangalore, N.D.Wani, Director Colleges and Dr. Rajive Gupta, Director, College Development Council, University of Jammu were the Guests of Honour.
Dr. Arun K.Gupta, Chairman MIER Group of Institutions, who is also the Chairman of the Conference, while welcoming the distinguished guests expressed, expressed his warm regards for Malik for inaugurating the Conference. He also thanked other dignitaries for gracing the occasion and complimented the delegates for making appreciable efforts regarding their participation and contribution to the conference. Congratulating the organizers he said that the College was looking forward to greater collaboration between NAAC and the quality related agencies for improving the Quality of Higher Education in the region. The present conference was one of such attempts initiated by the institution in collaboration with the NAAC Bangalore.
In his inaugural address, Malik greatly appreciated the efforts made by NAAC and MIER to discuss a significant topic related to improving the quality of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. The Minister further said that the Higher Education needs to be designed and executed to facilitate in depth knowledge and understanding so as to advance the learners to new frontiers of knowledge in different walks of life and prepare them to face the challenges due to globalization privatization. He reiterated that the higher education is the joint responsibility and collaborated effort of institutions, teachers, students, regulating and assessment & Accreditation agencies. He highlighted the efforts made by the Department of Higher Education J&K towards improving the quality of Teaching and Learning and said that Higher Education is being made available to the aspiring youth even in the far flung areas.
Introductory remarks to the Conference were given by Dr. Renu Gupta, Director MIER, who stressed the need for improving the quality of teaching and learning in higher education. She observed that while on the one hand, the expansion of higher education was very encouraging on the other the quality of teaching and learning had seriously deteriorated. She also highlighted the objective of the conference and the salient features.
Director Colleges eulogized contribution of MIER in the private sector in the dissemination of the message of quality in higher education. He further reiterated that institution like MIER should be given the autonomous status and serve as a role model for other institutions. In his keynote address, Dr. Shyamsunder deliberated on role of NAAC in improving Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. He highlighted that 30 Colleges and 2 Universities had been Assessed and Accredited in J&K. He explained in detail the criteria employed for assessing and grading of colleges and the Universities to ensure the requisite standards in teaching and learning. Dr. Lokesh Verma Professor and Dean, Faculty of Education, University of Jammu, in his keynote address highlighted the academic initiatives undertaken with regard to improving the quality of teaching and learning in higher education. He further reiterated that adoption of quality norms alone would make teaching and learning result and quality oriented. The conference has about 70 participants drawn from various States of India participating in it and shall be spread over nine technical sessions, in which more than 25 papers shall be presented. The conference is seen as an important academic event in the region. Eminent resource persons and educationists namely Prof. S.P.Malhotra, National Fellow NUPA and President AIAER, Dr. Lokesh Kaul, Prof. Emeritus and former Dean faculty of Education, H.P.University, Dr. Meenakshi Kilam, Director, Distance Education, University of Jammu, Dr. Amit Kauts, Dean Faculty of Education, GNDU, Amritsar, Dr. Sunil Thaman, Registered QMS Lead Auditor RABQSA (USA) and Principals of various Colleges of Jammu and neighbouring states of Punjab, Haryana and Hmachal Pradesh attended the inaugural session of the conference. Dr. Adit Gupta, Joint Director, MIER presented the vote of thanks to distinguished guests and delegates.
