JAMMU, October 23

Dr Yashpal Sharma, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Mr Shamlal Sharma, has become the first “NABH Assessor” from Jammu & Kashmir.

In a communication received from National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers (NABH), Dr Sharma has been declared successful in the examination conducted after the NABH training course which was held in the month of August this year.

The Deputy Director of NABH, Dr B.K. Rana, has congratulated Dr Sharma for achieving this distinction.

A communication from Dr Rana said that in due course of time, Dr Sharma will be issued a certificate for becoming an NABH Assessor. The training course for hospital accreditation programme was held in Noida between August 8 and12, 2009.

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), Quality Council of India, is located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in New Delhi.

The NABH provides frame-work for quality assurance and quality improvement for hospitals with special focus on patient safety and quality of patient care. It is a constituent board of Quality Council of India (QCI) and an institutional member of the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQUA).

The NABH has been set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organisations. The board is structured to cater to desired needs of the consumers and to set benchmarks for progress of health industry.

The board, while being supported by the stakeholders, enjoys full functional autonomy.

About quality, Henry Ford had said that quality means doing it right when no one is looking. This is the guiding principle of the QCI and it follows stringent norms for its tests.

Dr Sharma is an author of books on hospital administration and biomedical waste disposal.

He was earlier the Medical Superintendent of the SMGS Hospital here. During his tenure, he set new standards of healthcare in the hospital and transformed it. Dr Sharma had worked with distinction for some time in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) also before being appointed as OSD to the Health Minister.
