| Jurisdiction of 2 CUs notified | | HRD team to select locations | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 23: Following a decision of the Government of India to establish two Central Universities in Jammu and Kashmir the government today notified their jurisdiction even as the selection of their exact location is yet to be made by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. Central University of Jammu and Kashmir established under the Central Universities Act, 2009 has now been replaced by the Central University of Kashmir with its jurisdiction over the whole of Kashmir division under the Central Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2009 No. 8 of 2009 dated October 20, 2009 and another Central University has been established in Jammu division. The provisions of the Ordinance are reproduced as: The Central University of Jammu and Kashmir established under sub-section (4) of section 3 shall be known as the Central University of Kashmir and its territorial jurisdiction shall be limited to the Kashmir division of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. There shall be established a university, which shall be a body corporate, to be known as the Central University of Jammu having its territorial jurisdiction extending to the Jammu division of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. HRD team to approve site for Jammu central university A team of experts from the Human Resourcs Development Ministry (HRDM) is visiting Jammu and Kashmir shortly for site inspection. The team members will examine whether the area earmarked for the two central universities was suitable for the campuses or not. As far as the Jammu central university was concerned the state Government has identified a vast chunk of land around Pagla Panchayat, between Vijaypur and Samba, for the proposed university complex.Official sources said that the area was suitable and there was no problem of acquiring it because the land belonged to the Government.Sources said that since the campus complex required about 5,000 kanals of land such an area was not available anywhere in and around the Jammu district. A former Education Minister,Harsh Dev Singh, today said that if the Government has identified area around Pagla Panchayat it was the most suitable spot.He said the central university should be set up in an area which was not far away from the state's winter capital and the site selected could be less than 30 kms from Jammu city.He said another requir ement was that the campus should be close to eother the Railway station or to the national highway and the site selected is adjacent to both the railway st ation and the highway. When the central team arrived in Jammu it would further confirm the decision of the Government of India to set up t wo central universities,on in Jammu the other in Kashmir,in the state.Initially the centre had announced setting up of one centyral university for Jammu and Kashmir and when the state Government wittingly or unwittingly announcd to set up both the central university and the IIM in Srinagar it triggered protests in Jammu. It was under pressure from the state Government that the centre finally agreed to have two central universities in Jammu and Kashmir.
