| National seminar on spices in SKUAST-J concludes | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 24: A three day national seminar on spices organized by Sher-e-Kashmir University of agricultural sciences and technology of Jammu in collaboration with Directorate of Arecanut and spice development, Calicut, Kerala concluded here today. On concluding day the seminar started with the lectures by Dr. SK Sharma, director, national bureau of plant genetic resources, New Delhi. He emphasized upon preservation of natural plant genetic resources and bio diversity of naturally grown spice crops and stressed upon the intellectual property rights (IPR) of such natural resources of Indian origin lecture on Kalazeera, Dr. NS Chouhan professor and head department of forest products, YS Parmar university of horticulture and forestry, Solan (HP) discussed various aspects of Kalazeera while Dr JH Kadam from Maharashtra discussed post harvest technology of turmeric. Progressive farmers and spice growers from far flung areas of Paddar, Kishtwar areas of Doda district and turmeric, ginger, onion, garlic and coriander growers from Jammu, Samba, Kathua and Udhampur districts of the state participated in the seminar. They interacted with scientists for redressal of their problems related to cultivation, inspects pests and disease management, processing and marketing of high value spice crops. As many as 74 delegates from different state of the country and other universities of the state IIIM (CSIR) Jammu in the seminar were present in the plenary session. Scientist of SKUAST who were present in the valedictory function were Dr RM Bhagat DRI-cum-Dean, faculty of agriculture and Dr. NA Sudhan, director research and chairman of the national seminar. In his valedictory address Dr. B Mishra, vice chancellor of SKUAST Jammu thanked the delegates to share their scientific knowledge with scientific and farming community with a view of promote spice cultivation besides enhancing production and productivity. Dr MM Anwar, director NRCSS (ICAR) Ajmer placed before the house the salient recommendations of the national seminar, In situ conservation of spice crops, preservation of germplasm of important spice crops, need for a task force for registration of spice crops, establishment of the consortium for sharing of work on spice crops, compilation of standardized technology to protect spice crops against diseases and insects. Farmers who attended the seminar were taken around for a visit to the herbal garden of the university. Speaking to the farmers Dr. M Saleem professor and head division of agro forestry explained the importance and the cultivation methods of medicinal plants used as spices and treatment against various human ailments. He apprised the farmers that planting material of medicinal plants including tree spices like Raj Harad, Reetha, Berha, Bael etc. is being produced by the division of agro forestry for sale to farmers for promotion of medicinally important plants. Dr. SK Sharma, director NBPGR New Delhi released a book on cultivation of spice crops in Hindi language for the benefit given to spice growing.
