| For SRTC J&K formulating old wine in new bottle | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 25: In order to improve the financial status of the ailing SRTC the state government has drawn up a multi-pronged plan. Official sources said that the Transport Commissioner, K.B. Jandial has been playing pivotal role in finalizing the plan aimed at reviving and restructuring the sick SRTC. According to Jandial, plan envisages auctioning of the outdated buses and trucks and with added financial support from the Government a new fleet of buss and trucks was to be purchased. He said that SRTC has some immovable assets which would be utilized for commercial activities. Once it was done the SRTC would be able to generate internal resources. In reply to a question Jandial said that since the annual losses of the SRTC were touching over Rs.30 crores a move was afoot to abandon plying of SRTC buses on non-profitable routes. He said that the strength of passenger buses, belonging to the SRTC, would be increased on profitable routes. He said in order to reduce the losses VRS was being introduced in the SRTC so that the corporation was rid of surplus employees. Sources in the SRTC said that the employees were not as much responsible for the losses as ministers and legislators were. In support of their contention they said that during the last 35 years the successive state governments had kept on recruiting drivers, clerks and conductors in the corporation without reviewing the actual need. This way a major chunk of the internal resources and the Government aid used to be spent on meeting the wage bill of the employees. Meanwhile government sources said that when 6th pay commission report had not been implemented in favour of employees in profitable corporations how could it be implemented in case of the SRTC which has never shown any profit.
