CONSERVE ENERGY FOR THE GENERATIONS TO COME.
10/25/2009 11:07:02 PM

BY: Er. L.P.SINGH

Electrical energy conservation is an important element of energy policy. Energy conservation reduces the energy consumption and energy demand per capita and thus offsets some of the growth in energy supply needed to keep up with population growth. This reduces the rise in energy costs, and can reduce the need for new power plants, and energy imports. The reduced energy demand can provide more flexibility in choosing the most preferred methods of energy production. Energy conservation may result in increase of financial capital, environment value, national security, personal security, and human comfort.
Conservation of energy is becoming a vital issue day by day, not only because of the large gap between the supply and the demand of energy but more importantly due to the concern for fast depletion of the known non- renewable sources of energy world wise. It is estimated that these sources would last us at the most for the next 100 years and it is imperative that Mankind needs to find alternative sources as early as possible. The conservation of energy therefore offers us possibility of buying more time till we discover new sources.
The development of any country depends to a great extent on the availability and usage of energy. It is therefore, but natural that we all would be utilizing the available energy for commercial activities, industries, urban and rural development and personal requirement. No country can afford to think of not using energy. We all should look at the problem more seriously and make honest attempts in using the energy judiciously & not wasting it as we are having limited energy options at present. We should use energy efficient equipment and that too is of correct size, switching off electricity when not needed, such simple methods also save energy.
Energy conservation, which leads to more efficient use of energy without reducing comforts levels, does not mean rationalizing or curtailment or load shedding, but it is a means of identifying area of wasteful use of energy & taking action to reduce the energy waste. The Government has already brought in place energy conservation bill & formed the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) to address the issue. The BEE was set up in March 2002 with a mandate to assist in developing policies & strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles, within the overall framework of the Energy Conservation Act 2001.In its efforts to achieve this objective; the BEE has introduced several programmes which are at various stages of implementation. The common objective of each of these programmes is efficient use of energy in the relevant sector.

All of us will have to join hands and work in unison so as to make India an energy efficient economy and society. Energy efficiency will lead to in terms of competitiveness and a better share of the international market. Energy saving requires not just efficient equipment, appliances and gadgets, but most importantly it requires a change in the habits and attitude we have towards energy in general and electricity in particular. In this context creating public awareness becomes a matter of primary importance. Definitely in this case - knowledge is power! The habit of conservation is best introduced and inculcated at the school age. Children, it has been seen are the best agents of change and in this case we need to equip them with the information and knowledge on energy conservation. The introduction of energy conservation as a subject in the school curricula would go a long way in spreading the message of energy conservation throughout the country.
Each one of us has a role to play in promoting energy efficiency and conservation. Government alone cannot do this by itself. All of us need to make a conscious effort to embrace energy efficient practices and products. Building owners, architects and engineers have a special responsibility for incorporating energy efficiency measures when designing and developing new structures.

We hope that we all will work together and resolve to save energy and not waste it so as to build a better tomorrow for the generations to come.
