Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 26: The conflict between doctors and the government today further deepened as despite a warning process of making new recruitments of Registrars and Demonstrators the agitating medicos instead of relenting or feeling insecure about their jobs took a direct upfront with the administration.
In an apparent bid to weaken the agitation, the government had notified for recruitment of new Registrars and Demonstrators at the Government Medical Colleges of Jammu and Srinagar after 50 medicos were either suspended or repatriated to the Health Department from the Medical Education Department. The government was expecting this notice of recruitment post-suspension as a last warning to the agitating medicos. However, the striking junior doctors today heightened their confrontationist approach several notches up.
Since the government had called for walk-in interviews for the posts of Registrars and Demonstrators to fill in the vacancies caused by suspension or reversion of agitating medicos, the Medical College at Jammu was today the epicenter of the tussle. The agitating doctors had planned a mega demonstration at the Medical College as part of their ongoing strike and an additional bid to sabotage the recruitment process. Securing smooth entry for the aspirants to apply for the posts was, however, today’s main concern of the government which largely remained successful.
As many as 49 applications were received by the Principal GMC Jammu for the posts of Registrars and Demonstrators as a heavy police bandobast blocked entry of agitating medicos to the College complex. 54 applications for these posts were received at the GMC Srinagar and walk-in interviews were held at both places. Medical Education Minister Rajinder Singh Chib, who was in Srinagar, said that selection process was in progress.
A heavy contingent of Police foiled doctors' 'GMC Chalo' call and held them up here in the Medical College hostel premises where they were protesting for the past 23 days. Shouting slogans, large number of junior doctors this morning assembled in hostel premises and tried to march towards Government Medical College (GMC) where fresh interviews for the recruitment of doctors were being conducted.
''In two days, government took action against 51 doctors and ordered fresh recruitments, but for the past one year, no attention was paid to their ''genuine demands,'' said one of the doctor leaders.
He said it is surprising that instead of accepting their demands, government suspended 27 doctors and reverted eleven assistant surgeons back from medical education to the health department.
Doctors however, continued with the agitation and the demonstration for the consecutive 23rd day. ''The protests will continue unless the government comes out with a concrete solution to our demands and if it failed, the agitation will be intensified after Darbar Move, which is scheduled for November 9,'' another doctor said.
Meanwhile, a meeting to review the latest situation arising out of the Junior Doctors strike was held under the chairmanship of RS Chib, Minister for Medical Education at Srinagar today. The Minister reviewed the steps being taken to put in place doctors in Associated Hospitals of Government Medical College, Srinagar/Jammu to cope up with the work load and improve the medical care facilities. The role of the faculty of the Government Medical Colleges in providing round the clock emergency services was appreciated and it was felt that efforts should continue to provide the requisite doctors in the hospitals.
The Principal Medical College Srinagar/Jammu have invited applications for filling up the vacancies of Demonstrators/Registrars on fast track basis. There has been a good response to the departmental advertisement notice and 104 applications were received which include 55 applications by Government Medical College Srinagar and 49 by Government Medical College, Jammu. The process of recruitment is going on and further appropriate necessary action is being taken in the matter.
In the meanwhile, the department has issued authorization to the engagement of 28 specialist doctors under NRHM who are being deployed. The specialist doctors so engaged are from the field of Gynae, Pediatrics, Surgery, Anesthesia etc. Further steps are on anvil to improve the healthcare facilities in Medical College Hospitals.
