Army observes ‘Infantry Day’ pays homage to ‘war heroes of 1947’

Infantry Day today was celebrated unlike past years by the Indian Army to mark the landing of the First Battalion ‘The SIKH Regiment’ under the Indian tricolour in Kashmir to save it from the marauding tribal invaders from Pakistan on 27 Oct 1947.
The GOC-in-C Northern Command, Lt Gen BS Jaswal, paid homage to the martyrs at the Northern Command War Memorial. In his message, the Army Commander, who himself hails from the infantry, reiterated the commitment to the ongoing proxy war and asked troops to be a continued source of inspiration to the Motherland by dedicating themselves to the values of courage, devotion to duty, honesty and integrity in order to maintain the highest traditions of the Indian Army.
PRO Northern Command stated that the “Infantry Day’ has a special significance for the Northern Command as it forms a key stone to its eventual formation in protecting not only the diversified borders of Jammu and Kashmir, but also the people from the menace of terrorism.
Meanwhile in another memorial ceremony, organized at JAK RIF War Memorial at Jammu, army paid homage to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the country. The wreath laying was conducted by highly decorated Jawans, JCOs, serving and retired officers and General Officer Commanding Tiger Division, Maj Gen K Surendranath, at Amar Jawan Jyoti. The ceremony revived the memories of the supreme sacrifice of gallant Infantry soldiers, who have valiantly fought the external aggressors and the raiders to safeguard the integrity and unity of our country.
Army spokesperson at Jammu stated that it is to mention that foundation of this War Memorial was laid down by Dr Karan Singh the then Governor of J&K State on 13 April 1953 and the monument was dedicated to the memory of brave soldiers by the then president of the Union of India Dr Rajinder Prasad on 13 April 1954.
He added in the late evening a candle light ceremony was organized at the War Memorial by the officers of 20 JAK RIF of Sunrise Brigade and their families paid homage to the gallant soldiers of Infantry.
