Coalition is failing J&K: Mehbooba
10/27/2009 10:15:35 PM

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 27: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has said the internal contradictions of the coalition government and the bitter power struggle within the National Conference has landed the state into a serious crisis of governance.
Expressing anguish at the inability of the government to resolve the doctor’s problems Mehbooba in a statement issued here today said the common people had become a victim of the political games being played out in the National Conference.
“There was also an obvious lack of coordination between the two coalition partners in dealing with the situation” she said.
Instead of reaching out to the medical professionals and appreciating their genuine demands in a spirit of accommodation the government was using strong arm tactics in true tradition of the NC, itself busy settling political scores, she said.
While it was necessary for doctors to ensure that people’s sufferings were reduced the primary responsibility was that of the government to resolve the crisis, Mehbooba said. She said doctors are an important section of society who have worked in trying circumstances during the last two decades to treat the victims of violence and the government should have shown a special consideration for them but instead it seems to be driven by some other considerations.
Referring to the dismal performance of the state government on almost all fronts of governance, Mehbooba said the hopeless power situation was reminiscent of the dark days before 2002. “The party that claims to be fighting for Pre 1953 position after having bartered it away for petty interests has achieved the miracle at least in case of power
supply” she said and added both rural and urban areas had to bear the brunt of government’s mismanagement.
Mehbooba said while like other election promises the NC had gone back on reducing the power tariff, now it had curtailed supply to all consumers including those in the metered areas. On the other hand the funds received from the centre were either unspent or diverted to non productive purposes, she said.
