Congress MLAs from Jammu stop hoping for an audience from Sonia Gandhi
10/3/2006 11:39:47 PM

Jammu.October 3
Several Congress leaders from the Jammu region, who have been campaigning, though secretly, against a raw deal being meted to their region and to the congress by the Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, have stopped hoping for an audience from the AICC Chief,Ms Sonia Gandhi.
Soon after the cabinet expansion on August 29,2006 congress legislators from the Jammu region, who had failed to find a berth in the council of ministers, had sought time from Ms Gandhi. They were asked to stay put in Jammu and wait for the AICC Chief’s nod for the interview. The desperate Thakur Puran Singh,MLA from Darhal constituency in Rajouri district, had gone to Delhi and despite a wait for a few days he failed to meet Ms Gandhi and was forced to return to Jammu.
As over one month passed and no word was received from the AICC Chief the congress legislators have given up their hope of meeting Ms Gandhi. They had decided to apprise the UPA chairperson of the problems being faced by the Congress legislators from the Jammu region.
A couple of Congress legislators told Kashmir Independent Press in Jammu on Tuesday “despite the fact that voters of Jammu supported the congress in 2002 election enabling it to share power with the PDP,party MLAs were denied their rightful berth in the council of Ministers.”
They said “out of 13 Assembly seats the congress had bagged eight in the Jammu district and seven had been inducted in the council of ministers when Mufti Mohd.Sayeed was the Chief Minister. And when a man from our party, hailing of the Jammu region, became the Chief Minister only one MLA,Mangat Ram Sharma has been inducted in the cabinet and the other,Gulchain Singh Charak,is a member of the upper House and cannot claim to represent people of Jammu.”
The congress legislators said “we respect Mr Azad but the way he has sidelined legislators as far as securing redressal of peoples’ problems were concerned we have been reduced to nonentities.”
One of them said “we are not allowed to enter the secretariat before 3 P.M..our recommendations are being thrown into the waste paper baskets by the bureaucracy and the ministers forcing us to become a laughing stock before our electorate.”
He said these were some of the problems “we planned to raise during our meeting with Ms Sonia Gandhi. But to our chagrin Ms Gandhi has either been misled or misinformed about the purpose of our meeting.”
They said “despite our humiliation we have decided to work as a soldier of the Congress. But we have fears that in the next election the Congress may face a debacle if damage control exercise was not carried out.”
