| PM lauds forces for defending borders in adverse conditions | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 29 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today commended the security forces for their '' brave and heroic'' efforts under adverse circumstances in maintaining peace in the country and safeguarding the borders but also reminded them about their accountability. Addressing a press conference here this afternoon before leaving for New Delhi, Dr Singh commended the brave and heroic efforts of the security forces under very adverse circumstances. ''We have raised the standards of accountability and transparency in their working in order to enhance public trust and confidence,'' he said. Dr Singh said he had a very good interaction with the officers and men of the paramilitary forces and J&K police. The responsibility for maintaining law and order in the state will increasingly devolve on the Jammu and Kashmir police, he said. Earlier, addressing a sammelan of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and Jammu and Kashmir police at Humhama here, Dr Singh lauded the role of paramilitary forces in maintaining peace and safeguarding the borders of country. ''Entire nation will always back you, ''he told them. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office, Prithviraj Chavan, Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda and Director General CRPF, A S Gill were among those present on the occasion. The Prime Minister said the paramilitary forces have played an important role in Jammu and Kashmir, North-Eastern states, Maoist infested areas in curbing terrorism by working in adverse conditions for which they deserve special appreciation. Dr Singh said he was glad to meet the paramilitary forces adding that they have great history in maintaining peace, law and order. ''You provide help to people and play role in conducting free and fair elections'', he said. He also paid tributes to officers and officials of paramilitary forces who have sacrificed their lives while discharging their professional duties. The Prime Minister said the government is aware of their problems and is contemplating measures to provide better facilities to them in border areas and far off places. He called upon them to work with more dedication to strengthen the nation and eliminating terrorism and communalism.Dr Singh wished the security personnel success and new heights in their careers.Mr Khoda gave a resume of police working in the state, explaining its role in improving security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir.Mr Gill also gave details of the functioning of CRPF in the state.Earlier, a Guard of honour was presented to the Prime Minister on his arrival at the venue.
