Tara Chand inspects lake conservation works on ground,
Issues on the spot orders for attachment of XEN

Srinagar, October 30 - A day after the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh showed concern about the conservation of world famous Dal Lake and declared Dal Lake conservation a national priority, the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Tara Chand alongwith MLC, Abdul Gani Vakil and concerned higher authorities today conducted an extensive inspection of various conservation works going on in and around the water body. He ordered time bound action on renovation and cleansing of various viewing decks (Jattis) along the lake on modern design. He ordered cleansing of viewing deck near Nishat garden within 10 days.
Worthwhile to mention, Prime Minister during his recent visit to the Valley while describing Dal Lake conservation a national priority, has sanctioned an additional grant of Rs. 356 crore for rehabilitation of Dal dwellers.
Deputy Chief Minister also expressed his concern on the slow pace of work on beautification of fore-shore line and ordered an inquiry to find out causes for delay in execution of works. He also ordered attachment of the concerned executive engineer. He also ordered strict enforcement of ban on use of polythene in and around the Dal lake and instructed for installing dust bins at each viewing deck around the water body. He also urged for renovation and beautification of pathways along the Dal Lake. He said liecenses of those shikara-walla would be cancelled who are found using polythene in their shikaras.
Dy. Chief Minister also inspected mechanical deweeding operations and was informed that seven most modern deweeding machines have been purchased from Finland and USA to further augment machinery resource for conservation of the Dal Lake.
Dy. Chief Minister also inspected the upcoming recreation park near Makki point, Dal Lake at a cost of Rs. 15 lakhs. He instructed the concerned engineers to construct shelter sheds in the park as per the traditional design suiting to the ecology of the Dal Lake. The park is expected to be completed by ending March this year.
While interacting with the Dal Dwellers and shopkeepers, Mr Tara Chand sought their cooperation and contribution in conserving the Dal Lake adding that the water body is not only the identity of J&K but also provides livelihood to thousands of people associated with Tourism and travel trade. He showed his concern over the huge dumps of polythene and garbage near various jattis (viewing decks) adding that it indicates re-emergence of polythene use.
Commissioner Secretary, Housing and Urban Development, Mr Abdul Hamid, Director Information, Kh. Farooq Ahmad Renzu, Vice Chairman, Lakes and Water Ways Development Authority, Mr Irfan Yasin, Chief Engineer, UEED, Mr Ashwani Sharma, Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Mr Tufail Mattoo and concerned officers and engineers accompanied the Dy. Chief Minister during the tour.
