| Dwivedi extends Jhiri fest call to Jammuites | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 31: The annual Jhiri Mela, in the memory of Baba Jitto is being celebrated from 2nd- 7th November, 2009 at the village Jhiri near here. Deputy Commissioner, Manoj Dwivedi said that the mela will be inaugurated on the 2nd November by Dy. Chief Minister Tara Chand, who will be the chief guest and Ali Mohammad Sagar minister for rural development, panchayat raj, law and parliamentary affairs preside over the function. The centuries old famous Jhiri Mela is held every year during the Karthik Purnima failing in the last week of October and early November. Lacs of devotees visit the village to commemorate the martyrdom of Baba Jittoo, a farmer who gave up his life in protest against the oppressive demands of the zamindar about 500 years ago. As per Dwivedi elaborate arrangements have been made for the convenience and comfortable visit of thousand of devotees who throng the shrine of the farmer martyr every year. He stated that the all the government departments and the Mela committee and other agencies have geared up for the six days festivities which will include cultural programmes, foods stalls, traditional wrestling (dangal) and joyrides for children. The highlight of the mela will be the staging of the highly acclaimed play “Baba Jittoo” by Natrang on the 2nd and 3rd November at Jhiri.
