| Soaring prices making consumers austere | | | CHAMAN KAUL Jammu, Nov 1: Unprecedented increasing rates of daily used commodities including Atta, rice, vegetables and sugar have forced common customers to take self imposed austerity measures. Not only this but also customers are forced to restrict them selves for even buying essential commodities including soaps, toiletries, cosmetic and detergents. Which resulted against consumer goods companies by marking significant impression of down sales and profit growth? In recently issued Q2 statement of largest consumer company Hindustan Unilever Limited quoted 22% down growth as Net Profit 4.29 vs 5.47 and Net Sales 40.29 vs 42.28 as compared to its pervious quarter. Though, in banking, automobiles and other allied companies have shown slightly growth and the companies directly catering middle and lower class section of society are facing jolt. Sky rocketing prices of rice, atta, pulses, and vegetables have confused consumers as well as shopkeepers. “Pulses are around Rs 90 per Kilogram, rice and atta abruptly raised Rs. 2 by over night and similar is case with onion which raised Rs. 3 in a single go by over night and are expected to keep raising” said Mohan Lal a shopkeeper at Residency Road and added that it is purely in the hands of state government to control the rates in the larger interest of poor and middle class. Another shopkeeper at Gummat said that earlier one thousand was enough to get commodities for sales in a day or two to the customers in street but on the one hand rates of necessary commodities is rising non stop and on the other hand shortage of goods have created miseries for shopkeepers and as well as for customers. President Raughnath Bazaar Association, Baldev Khullar said that untimely increasing of rates is due irresponsible attitude of government towards apathy. He said government has not any policy to keep a check and balance in this regard, though, in the case of packed items government has succeeded in keeping a check. He informed that retailers are being told by whole sellers that rates have increased from Delhi Mandi and whole sellers in turn are being told that rates have been increased by states, exporting goods. But no body knows what yard stick is being used to sold and buy the various commodities of daily needs, he asked. “Survival of poor people has become impossible in present era as one can’t afford to buy from retailers shop as rates are soaring and so called government ration depots are always short of stock” said Hem Raj and added that government always extends offers for poor people which only exists in papers whereas the fact is there is no adequate availability of ration, Sugar and kerosene oil in several depots in the city and what could be expected in far flung areas.
