Guru Nanak Dev a great revolutionary
DR . Gurmeet Singh11/1/2009 10:09:41 PM

At the age of 38 in August 1507, Guru Nanak Sahib heard God's call to dedicate himself to the 'SERVICE OF HUMANITY" after disappearing and then appearing after three days from the river in VANI NADI" (a local river) near Sultanpur Lodhi. The very first sentence which he uttered then was, there is no HINDU, no MUSLMAN, that was the time when the birth of very original and enlightened Gurbani named "JAP JI SAHIB" took place.
The services of mankind "SEWN', "KIRTAN", "SATSANG" and "FAITH" in "ONE" omnipotent GOD are the basic concepts of "SIKHISM" established by Guru Nanak Sahib. Thus he laid the foundation of Sikhism. He preached new idea of God as supreme, Universal, all powerful and truthful described in JAP JI SAHIB starting with "SALAK" - GOD is formless "NIRANKAR", the sole, the creator, the self existent, the in comprehensible, the Ever-lasting and the creator of all things "KARTA PURAKH" GOD is in "INFINITE" ,all
knowing, true, all giver, "NIRVAIR" and "OMNIPOTENT". HE is "SATNAM", the ETERNAL and absolute "TRUTH" (Mool-mantar).
BHAI GURUDAS JI said: THE bounteous Lord heard the anguished cry of the people of this world of woe so, he sent Guru Nanak to this world.
SUNI PUKAAR DATAR PRABH, GURU NANAK JAG MEIN PATHAYIA (Bhai Guru Das ji, Var I,Pouri-23)
Brief Introduction of Guru Nanak DEV JI:-
Guru Nanak Sahib (the first Nanak, the founder of Sikhism) was born in 1469 AD at Rai-BHOI-di Talwandi in the present district of shekhupura (Pakistan) popularly known "Nankana Sahib" and celebrated on kartik puranmashi. Guru Nanak's father Mehta Kalyan Das, more popularly known as Mehta Kalu Ji, was the agent and chief accountant of Rai Bular(the then ruler of that area). Gurunanak's mother was Mata Tripta Ji, a simple, pious and extremely religious woman, Nanak had an elder sister, Nanaki, who always cherished her younger brother.
That was the time when LODI emperors were ruling, innocent Hindus and their religions were in danger and being forcibly converted in muslim fold. It is pertinent to mention here that the "Tyranny and the fundamentalism" were not the only factors, but the teachings of the "Holy Quran and its Doctrine" (Islamic Law) preached by the then great Sufi Faqirs and Scholars have played a pivotal role to attract the people of all section of society to embrace the 'Islam' across the world.
Nanak was an extra-ordinary and different child in many ways. God provided him with contemplative mind and rational thinking. At the age of seven, he learnt Hindi and Sanskrit. He surprised his teachers with the sublimity of his extra-ordinary knowledge about divine things. At the age of thirteen, he learned Persian and Sanskrit and at the age of 16, he was the most learned young man in the region. He was married to Mata Sulakhaniji, who gave birth to two sons: Srichand and Lakshmi Dass. Guru Nanak's elder sister Nanakiji took him to sultanpur lodhi where her husband Jai Ram ji got him the job of storekeeper in the "MODIKHANA" of the local Nawab, Daulat Khan Lodhi and spent few year and suddenly left the job and devoted to the mission for which he was sent by the God himself.
In fact he was a great revolutionary and as well as "A social reformer". Guru Nanak sahib upheld the cause of "WOMEN" down trodden and the poor especially neglected untouchable class. He attacked the citadel of caste system of Hindus and theocracy of Muslim rulers regarding women he said:
"SOl KION MAN DA AKHIYE, JIT JAME RAJAAN"
He advocated the supremacy and respectful status and equality for the women in all walks of life in the society, hence condemned the act of feticide of female child.
Regarding Untouchable class, he has shown remarkable solidarity and stood by their side as a rock and shelter (Shielded them)
N "NICHA ANDER NEECH JAT (CASTE) NEE CHEE HU AAT NEECH, NANAK TIN KEI SANG- SATH VADIYO SIO KIYA REES, JITHAI NEECH SAMABHALYIAN TITHAI NA DIR TIREE BAKHSEES"
So, this way he has shown the courage and wisdom to condemn the age old practice of hatredness against the untouchable by the upper class society for the first time and protected them.
It is pertinent to mention here that during the four journeys (These long tours are called "Char udassis" of Guru Nanak Sahib accompanied with Bhai Mardana and Bhai Balla, one was Muslim and other was Hindu, both belonging to the lower caste of the society). Hence, formed the casteless society and made bridge between the two communities, thus advocated the preaching of his unique and divine doctrine of brotherhood and common kitchen. Guru Nanak Sahib visited different religious places right from Hindu holy places Ladakh- Amarnath- Haridwar- Rameshwaram, Jagan Nath Puri- Prayag -Varanasi across the country up to Tibetceylon etc. He also visited Muslim holy places in India and across the country. In this regard, he went to Macca, Madina, Beghdad (Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey and also covered Kabul, Kandhar, Jalalbad). The real aim of the tours was awakening the people to realize the "TRUTH" about "GOD" that is lying in service of the "Humanity" irrespective to their caste, color, creed, race, region, religion etc.
During his sidh ghosties with gorakhnath sect, many hindu and muslim scholars of that time and faced many queries regarding the prevailing religion. It was questioned to Guru Nank as to which religion he belonged to, was he a muslim, or a hindu, who was better among hindu and muslim? He simply replied, neither He was a muslim, nor a hindu, simply a human being who followed the path of God, who was omnipotent, and never discriminated the mankind (very well described in JapJi Sahib).
Guru Nanak sahib was not merely a saint, but a great revolutionary and reformer but was terribly disturbed and shaken the way Babar attacked India in 1520. His troops slaughtered thousands of innocent civilians of all walks of life. Women, children were made captives and all their property looted at AMINABAD (Pakistan). At the time of attack, he was staying with a very poor carpenter named Bhai LALLO ji (He never made his disciples servant but used to call them Bhai, meaning brother) and challenged this kind of brutality and act of barbarity of Babar in strong words: TILANG mahla I,Page (722-23) and said, what for you have come here, only to terrorize the innocent people and capture the territory?
"PAAP KI JANJ LAI KABALOH DHAYIA, JORI MANGAI DAAN VI LALLO"
He further said, "KHURASAN KHASMAANA KEEYA, HINDUSTAN DARAYIA"
Even he registered his protest to the almighty by saying that"EETI MAR PAYEE KURLANE, THE KU DARD NA AYA" where were you when people were tortured. He further elaborated the functioning of Raj tantar.
"RAJE SHI MUKADAM KUTIE JAYE JAGAYAN BETHE SUTIE" . assa mehla pehla 1 Page 360
Rulers were like lions and their servants were like furious dogs who attacked innocent people at mid night while sleeping and tortured them and also looted their property, snatched their women. People were living in atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
For this protest, Nanak was arrested and released shortly after making Babar realizing his blunder. All the prisoners were also released. In this context, Guru Nanak Sahib did not spare any class in the society whether highly educated, excessive greedy, black marketers, kings, politicians, administrators, judicial or religious persons even those who kept extra martial relation by describing through preaching Gurbani:
"LAB, PAAP DO RAJA, MEHTA KUR HUA SIKDAR, KAM NEB SAD PUCHH KI BHE-BHE KARE VICHARAR"
(Asa Ji DI var )
PARIYA MOORAKH AKHIYE JIT LAB LOB AHANKAR (Asa Ji Di var)
AKHEE SUTAK VEKHNA PER TRIYA PER DHA ROOP (Page 472)
Even casting evil eye upon other women and property is a sinful act.
Guru Nanak sahib has offered also very simple solution for bread earners to contain own instinct, desires and excessive greed by observing high standards of living with simplicity and honesty and describing through his preaching:
NAAM JAPO, KIRT KARO, WAND CHHAKO
"GHAL KHAYE KITCH HATHODE NANAK RAHA PACHHANE SAHE" (1245)
"HAK PARAYA NANAKA US SUARUS GAYE" (141)
"UDHAM KARE DIYA JEEOU TU KAMADIYA SUKH BHUANEH"
'BINA SANTOSH NAHI KOI RAJE"
So, without contentment no one is satisfied. Honest earning with hard work and that too distributed among needy people is recommended. Further he advocated that everything is at "HOME" (GRISTHASHRAM) and nothing is outside and one can achieve goal of salutation.
Enjoy your family observing high moral character and ethos in full bloom with the blessings of god and see that almighty will never let you down
"GHAR SUKH VASAYA BAHAR SUKH PAYS KAHO NANAK GUR MATER DARAYA"
Guru sahib has expounded the truth that if one can drive peace and happiness coupled with respect and honor in abundance outside also Nanak described, this is the only "GURU MANTER" (Secret of life)so Guru Nanak sahib emphasized the leading of "HOUSE HOLDER'S LIFE" (GRAHAST) supreme, discharging his/her duties with honest and responsible way and unattached to gross materialism. The philosophy of Nanak was to establish casteless, honest, work oriented and corruption free society who lives in communal harmony and universal brotherhood.
"NANAK DHUKHIYA SAB SANSAR, SO SUKHIYA JIS NAAM ADHAR". He knew the pulse of the common man's psychology. He was a great thinker and provided a simple and honest way of life.
He also rejected the path of "DHARAM ANHATA", KARAM KAND, RENUNCIATION TYAGA OR SANJASA, the authority of Vedas and the Hindu caste system.
He was a born poet and also a perfect musician. He was in the company of Bhai Mardanaji composed such times in various Indian classical RAGAS that charmed and towed wild creatures like Babar, subdued sagging kings, raved bigots, tyrants made thugs and robbers saints few such saloks mentioned above. He wrote 947 Hymans comprising "JAP JI SAHIB", ASA DIVAR, BARA MAH, Sidh-Gosht, Onkar (Dakhani) and these were included in "Sri Guru Granth Sahib" by Sri Guru Arjan dev Ji the 5th Nanak. This is the only scripture in world which has been compiled and edited by the founders of a faith during their own life time and founded world of famous Gurdwara Harmandir Sahib (Golden temple)
At last, Sri, Guru Nanak dev ji settled down at Kartarpur city (Now in Pakistan) which was founded by him in (1522-1539). There was daily kirtan and the institution of LANGER (Free Kitchen)was introduced and also performed 'Kheti' (agriculture) knowing that the end was drawing near. Guru Nanak sahib, after testing his two sons and followers, installed Bhai LAHENA JI (Guru Angad Sahib) as the second Nanak in 1539 and after a few days passed into SACHKHAND on 22nd September 1539.
On his heavenly abode, both the communities claimed his body for the last rituals, that was the impression and impact he left on the mind of people. There is a popular saying, Nanak Shah Fakir, hindu ka guru, muslman ka peer.
Thus ended the worldly journey of this "God-gifted Master" (Guru) of mankind. God had endowed him with a contemplative mind and pious disposition. Guru Arjun Sahib called him "The image of God, may God himself' There is a saying that whenever people living on this earth realize and start studying the practical life and preaching's of Nanak, all time immortal and live, will prove to be beneficial and benevolent for the whole mankind.
He always prayed for the welfare of the whole mankind by saying "NANAK NAM CHARDI KALA, TERE BHANE SARBET DA BHALLA"
SHAMA HAKSE MUNAVAR HO, VOH ROSHANI NA THEE REHMITE BHARISH HUI, JAMEEN KABIL NA THEE .... Elama Iqbal.
"DHAN BABA NANAK TIREE SACHCHI KAMAYI"
"GURU NANAK DEV JI DE PAVAN 'GURPURAB'/ PRAKASH DIVAS TE 'SARE JAGAT' NU LAKH-LAKH VADHAIYAN"
