| Two cops gunned down in Srinagar | | |
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 1: Unidentifiedgunmen, widely believed to be militants today gunned down two more personnel of Jammu & Kashmir on duty at busy Qamarwari Chowk in the capital city. Official sources told Early Times that Head Constable Manzoor Ahmed and Constable Abdul Kabir of Police Division Qamarwari were on duty at the crowded Qamarwari Chown in the capital city outskirts when two unidentified persons fired pistol shots into their heads in point blank range from behind at 1315 hours. While Manzoor died on spot, Kabir was evacuated by his colleagues and rushed to SKIMS for medical treatment. Having sustained grievous injuries, he too succumbed in the evening. Sources said that Manzoor was a resident of Sopore area, living in Srinagar for the last few years. Kabir was reportedly a esident of Sadarkoot village of Sumbal Sonawari. Eyewitnesses said that the fatal attack made on the Police personnel with possibly silencer-fitted pistols led to panic and the people around began running helter skelter in different directions. Some people claiming to be eyewitnesses alleged that Police in anger after the attack thrashed pedestrians and commuters, casusing damage to several vehicles. However, officials dismissed it as a baseless rumour spread by sympathisers of the militants. Suspected militants had similarly gunned down two CRPF personnel in the beginning of August this year in Civil Lines area of Lalchowk and later made an identitical strike on two J&K police personnel in theend of that month at Batmaloo. One of the two critically injured personnel had later sucumbed to injuries. Police on both occasions had vowed to arrest the culprits and take them to task "in a few days". Significantly, someone claiming to be a spokesman of Hizbul Mujahideen told local news agencies over telephone that militants of his organisation had carried out the attack on Police in retaliation to several recent operations that, according to him, had demoralised the militant rank and file in Valley. In a statement, he asked the civilians to walk far away from the bunkers of security forces which, he said, could be subjected to more strikes in near future.
