| Belated tribute to Baba Jitto, Tara Chand proposes board | | | Early Times Report Jhiri, Nov 2: On the doorsteps of Jammu City, the power center of the state and base camp for country’s two leading pilgrimages, lakhs of people drawn from several states throng every year to pay obeisance to the revolutionary farmer Baba Jitto. What disappoints to devotees is the fact that the annual fair in memory of Baba Jitto has been swelling in numbers year after year but authorities have never thought of constituting a managing committee to take care of the state of affairs. It is a dingy road from Mishriwala to Jhiri that gives the devotees bumpy rides before they reach the Dev Sthan for the weeklong annual fair organized in the months of October-November. It depends upon the Deputy Commissioner of the time as how much he is able to deck up the place and create an ambience for the festival. To the much delayed delightment of devotees, the Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, who inaugurated the festival today appeared to have released the serious shortcoming carried on for years. “There is an urgent requirement of proper management of state of affairs and creation of facilities as well as memoirs”, said the Deputy Chief Minister while inaugurating festival. He observed, “all this can not be achieved with adhoc measures as there is need of a proper board or a governing body to manage the affairs”. Taking a cue from the management of Shiv Khori pilgrimage in Reasi district, the Deputy Chief Minister said that he will move for a local government board with full autonomy but proper government support and sanctity for managing the affairs at Jhiri. “I will move this proposal before the Cabinet and if need be we may go for legislation to have a proper Board for Baba Jitto shrine”, said the Deputy Chief Minister to an applause from the participants. Tara Chand said that in consultation with local MLAs representing March and Raipur-Domana constituencies, the government will explore the possibility for setting up of a Board that would look after the management of the shrine and its development . He said considering the increasing influx of devotees to the shrine there was an impeding need for providing better infrastructure, including better provisions for the stay of visitors. He said government would also manage funds for construction of inn as proposed by the Mela Committee. Devotees described this as befitting tribute to Baba Jitto. Around six lakh devotees from Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and other parts of northern India visit Jhiri to pay tributes at the Amar Samadhi of Baba Jitto and his daughter, Bua Kaudi. Paying rich tributes to Baba Jitoo , Deputy Chief Minister said that Jammu and Kashmir is land of saints and seers whose teachings are rooted in its long cherished traditions and culture. Highlighting the high ethos of struggle and determination observed by Baba Jitto, Deputy Chief Minister said that his teachings are a beacon light for leading a righteous life. Deputy Chief Minister stressed upon the Mela Organising Committee to come up in a big way to educate the masses about the high traditions and composite culture of the State. He said they should also endeavour to acquaint them about the schemes for promoting various farming activities. Participants appreciated the efforts of Deputy Commissioner Jammu MK Dwivedi for organizing the festival in an impressive manner.
