| Drive to clean JKCA on, says Goni | | | Munish Gupta
JAMMU, Nov 03: Mr Sudershan Mehta along with his seven other colleagues are now out of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA). Their resignations were accepted by the association, president, Dr Farooq Abdullah, in a meeting held here yesterday.
An inquiry has also been instituted to look into the financial irregularities allegedly committed by Mr Mehta who has thus far been joint secretary of the association looking after its Jammu wing.
According to the JKCA top brass, strict action against Mr Mehta would follow in case of his being found guilty. This would include recovery of “excess amount” spent from association funds on various pretexts.
This was disclosed to the media by the chairman of the JKCA, Mr Mohd Aslam Goni. Earlier, Mr Goni was denied representation from Mr Mehta’s Modern Cricket Club to stall Mr Goni from entering the working committee of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association.
Those stripped off their posts in the JKCA included Mr Rahul Bharati and Mr Parveen Kapahi, working committee and development and constitutional committee members; Mr Vivek Sharma, selector Ranji Trophy; Mr Surjeet Singh, selector Under-22; Mr Ravinder Singh, selector Under-19; Mr Pankaj Dutta, selector Under-16 and Mr Rakesh Kumar, selector Polly Umrigar Trophy.
Nevertheless, all of these JKCA functionaries had resigned from their posts a few days ago, blaming a the association higher ups of intervening in their working.
“Taking serious note of the activities of the group led by joint secretary, Mr Sudershan Mehta, Dr Abdullah termed the resignation by these members as a ploy to cover up their unscrupulous and corrupt deeds. These members have cheated the game of cricket by swindling lakhs of rupees meant for the genuine cricketers,” says Mr Aslam Goni.
He asserted that an appropriate action would be taken against these people in due course of time for their misconduct, indiscipline and abuse of position.
“In yesterday’s meeting, which took the action, it was unanimously decided to fix responsibility for financial irregularities through a proper committee set up for the purpose. And, if found guilty, proper and strict action shall be initiated,” maintained the chairman, who is also chairman of JKCA Finance Committee.
When asked what action was in store for the joint secretary, shot back, “full recovery of the misappropriated amount which may well go into lakhs.”
Copies of the explanation letter served to the joint secretary were distributed to the media. The queries in the letter by the JKCA treasurer included those about purchase of sports material, food served during the matches and various coaching camps during the season in flagrant violation of well laid down procedures by the Association.
“How can we justify the money spent by the Jammu wing. As against the allocation of Rs 11 lakhs each to Jammu and Kashmir wings by the central body, Kashmir wing spent only Rs 7,50,000 while Jammu wing submitted accounts for Rs 17,60,000 which is something unjustifiable,” pointed out the chairman. |
