| Several plans on anvil for improving living conditions of people | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 5-For improving living conditions of the people living in major town of the state, apart from the capital cities, the state Government plans to take in hand several measures. The survey indicates that the twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar have started experiencing alarming increase in the urban population resulting in better service and education facilities attracting large number of people not only from the district headquarters but from the border villages also. Official sources today said that in order to ensure better living conditions in the cities of Jammu and Srinagar, the Government has finalized a multi-pronged program for the development of urban infrastructure, in a time bound manner, for providing proper sewage and drainage systems. Besides this, the program is being implemented in such a way that will ensure supply of safe and sufficient drinking water, solid waste management, urban transport, slum development and houses for houseless which includes rehabilitation and settlement of families displaced from the water channels or on account of road widening program. The survey has revealed that proper development of roads, including their widening, construction of flyovers for reducing traffic jams and congestion, construction of car parking zones were needed to ensure better living conditions. For this purpose the Government has decided to ensure optimal utilization of several hundred crores of rupees earmarked under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. As far as the proper development of towns was concerned the Government aims at undertaking reform program for the empowerment elected urban bodies to make them viable and capable of handling the responsibilities of the development of the urban areas. Under the program emphasis is being given to the construction of roads that connect one district with the other. Besides this, the road widening program between Pul Doda and Kishtwar is planned to be taken up collaboration with the BRO and the R&B division of the state in a bid to minimize road accidents in the entire Doda district. The BRO has been asked to carry out another program of further widening Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and initiate measures for reducing the closure of the highway on account of landslides and heavy snow between Ramsu and Banihal and between Banihal and Qazigund
