| Farmers’ delegations meet Director Agriculture | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 5: Farmers from various districts including Jammu, Udhampur, Samba and Rajouri led by Rajesh Kumar Sharma (Bittu), Chairman Kissan Council met Director Agriculture, Jammu, Vinod Bala Sharma here and apprised her about various difficulties and needs of the farming community. They highlighted the need for timely and adequate stocking of seeds of cereals, vegetables and shortage of fertilizers at various locations. The farmers of Chenani and Sunderbani demanded vegetable projects for their respective areas and demanded adequate compensation for losses due to drought during Kharief season. They demanded mechanism in place to enable proper storage of their perishable produce like vegetables, flowers, mushroom etc and marketing facilities to complete production marketing linkage for optimum profits to the farmers and sustainability of agriculture. The farmers of Jammu and Samba districts demanded government intervention in procurement of Basmati from the farmers to provide remunerative returns to them. Director Agriculture gave a patient hearing to the delegations and apprised them that arrangements had been made for distribution of about 28000 quintals of wheat seed besides oats, barseem, mustard, pulses seeds of certified quality among farmers on subsidized rates. She stated that all the field staff had been directed to be extra vigilant to ensure that the seed reaches the farmers in adequate quantity at the approved rates and no person shall be allowed to cheat the farming community. She assured that stern action will be taken against the officers/ officials who do not perform their duties well or play mischief with the development schemes of the department. She requested for cooperation from the farming community also to defeat the nefarious designs of unscrupulous elements whether in the department or outside. Vinod Bala said that department has chalked out an elaborate programme for mass contact with the farming community in every district and assured that the department is already on the job to fulfill most of the demands projected in the meeting, at the same time steps shall also be taken to give a marketing and post harvest management orientation to Agriculture development activities through the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna and other schemes of the department. She also apprised the farmers about the incentives available on machinery and equipments, pumpsets etc under various centrally sponsored schemes.
