| UID Cards will be Available in the Next One Year | | | Agencies BHOPAL | NOV 05, 2009 The Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India Nandan Nilekani said that the government would be rolling out first set of Unique Identification Cards (UIDs) in the next 12 to 18 months. Nilekani who made a video presentation on the UIDs at the Mantralaya here last evening in the presence of the Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary Rakesh Sahni and other bureaucrats emphasised the importance of the cards which he said would be helpful in nation's security and identifying beneficiaries of various government sponsored schemes. After the presentation, Nilekani faced a volley of questions from senior bureaucrats on the implementation mechanism, utility and applicability of the proposed Unique Identification Cards. Registrars would be appointed who would see the preparations and the implementation of the scheme for the cards at State level, he said. Officials asked various queries including election ID cards, usage of database for NREGA with UIDs. Another official asked how will villagers would be able to remember the card number and how voter ID cards could be used in the UIDs.
