| Natrang stages special show of ‘Bawa Jitto’ | | | Early times Report Jammu Nov 6: Special show of Natrang’s highly acclaimed Dogri play ‘Bawa Jitto’ written by Late Prof. Ram Nath Shastri and directed by Balwant Thakur was organized here today at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu. Ashok Kumar Gupta IPS, Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The show was sponsored by Ram Pal Sharma- a devotee of ‘Bawa Jitto’. Today’s show was witnessed by a jam-packed audience and the presentation was more relevant for the reason that it was staged in Jammu at such a time when Jhiri Mela is gong on at village Jhiri where Bawa Jitto sacrificed his life about six hundred years back. The production of the play ‘Bawa Jitto’ is set in the rural backdrop, this 15th century Folk tale portrays the age-old saga of exploitation of landless farmers by landlords. Due to the constant and persistent pressures of relatives, with a piece of land as bone of contention, Bawa Jitto, a hard working, farm less farmer is forced to leave his native village Aghar Jitto (Katra). Accompanied by his nine-year-old daughter, he takes shelter in the house of a friend in Shamachak (Jhiri), a nearby village. The efforts of his friend Rullo result in a land grant from landlord in Shamachak and one fourth of the produce is fixed as land revenue. The hard work put in by him, the sweat and toil of Jitto turns a barren land into prolific treasure. This makes avaricious landlord to back out on his word and ask for major share of the crop. Helpless Jitto, unable to endure injustice, kills himself. The agony becomes boundless when Gauri, his little daughter immolates herself on her father's pyre. A team of thirty professional actors of Natrang enliven the six hundred year old saga in a magical style. The innovative production designed and directed by Balwant Thakur has already created history in the theatre world for its powerful electrifying performance. Arvind Anand who is known for his brilliance in Acting performed in a highly professional manner and kept the audience spellbound. Renu Sharma as Chachi Jojan was at her best in portraying an unusual character. Juhi Singh as BuaGauri ably performed the role. Anil Tickoo as Malli. Suresh Kumar as Mehta Beer Singh, Sanjeev Gupta as Isso, Vijay Bhatt as Sarpanch were so prefect in their portrayals that people were stunned to see their powerful acting. Dimple Sharma as Rullo and Tajasvi Sharma as Jeauni gave impressive performances. Others who did multiple roles on stage included Mohit Sharma, Rohit Verma, Hemant Bholla, Pankush Verma, , Rahul Singh, Mohd. Yaseen, Balwinder Singh, Sona Singh, Rajani Bhatti, Pratibha Heer, Romilla Besnet, Vikas Verma, Ashutosh Kohli, Ajay Kumar and Roohi Singh.
The Karkan singers Girdhari Lal and Harbans Lal who are the repositories of our narrative traditions gave engrossing performances. Lights were designed by Jai Ram & Suraj Ganjoo and sound was looked after by Lokesh Chander. Deepak Virdi was the stage manager and Sumeet Sharma coordinated the show and Surbhi did the presentations.
