| Geelani arrested to foil his Kulgam march in Kashmir | | | Srinagar, Nov 6 Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) and hardliner Huriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was arrested today to thwart his march to Kulgam in south Kashmir where he was scheduled to address a public meeting after Friday prayers. Kulgam district observed a complete shutdown in response to Geelani's call in protest against the alleged illegal occupation of lakhs of kanals of land by the security forces in the state. A spokesman of the Hurriyat told media persons that veteran Huriyat leader Geelani has been lodged in police station Humhama on Srinagar-Airport road in the central Kashmir district of Badgam. The Hurriyat chairman was scheduled to address a public meeting at Kulgam this afternoon. He said president of the Kulgam district of the amalgam Mohammad Shaban was also arrested by the police and houses of several other senior leaders were raided during the night. Meanwhile life was crippled in south Kashmir district of Kulgam today due to a strike called by breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) in protest against the alleged illegal occupation of lakhs of kanals of land by security forces in the state. Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was also off the road. Work in government offices, banks and public sector undertaking was affected due to the strike. Educational institutions wore a deserted look as students and teaching staff stayed away in response the call. Reports also said a large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed in the town since last evening.
