| Jammu Footprints 2009 | | SIMC organizes seminar on green battle, role of media in J&K | |
Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 8: Symbiosis institute of media and communication, (SIMC) Pune today organized a media seminar on green battle and role of media in development of J&K in Jammu at Abhinav theatre titled Jammu footprints 2009. “Footprints” is a series of media seminars encompassing the various aspects of the media relating to advertising, audio visual, journalism, public relations and witnessing the gargantuan participation from 23 cities across the country including two international venues one of which being Dubai. In Jammu, the media seminar was focused on two themes one being “The green battle” and the other “Role of media in the development of J&K”. NGOs like WWF, SOS – children’s village, HECRF and “Scope” had put up their stalls at the venue to create awareness amongst the youth. The event was aimed at students from different colleges and schools across J&K. Besides the seminar there was a variety of contests for students like RJ Hunt, college making, 1 minutes to fame (talent hunt), mind boggler quiz and more fun filled activities. The programme started with the welcome speech delivered by the director, SIMC, which was followed by the lighting of traditional lamp by the chief guest, Mian Altaf, minister for forests. In his address, Mian Altaf, stressed need for forestation in J&K and appealed the youth to play an active role in this direction. He praised the SIMC students for organizing such kind of seminar in Jammu which will create awareness among the people regarding deforestation and other related activities. Pradeep Dutta from Times Now, who has one of the guests, said that the role of media in changing scenario has great significance and is playing a role of bridge between to govt and people. He further stressed need for positive reporting in today’s scenario as most of the media channels are most focused on raising TRP. Another guest, Shujaat Bukhari, bereau chief of the Hindu, admitted in his address that some times, under compulsion, media plays a bias role which has to be discouraged at all levels. He cited the recent example of Amarnath agitation, where the media of Jammu and Kashmir was divided on the sensitive issue. But overall, media has and is contributing a lot to the society and is playing a big role in highlighting the day to day issues of the people. He also sought the co-operation of the people to the journalism more effective. Anuradha Bhasin Jamwal, from Kashmir Times, recalls her old days when there was no modern communication like internet, computers, mobiles, laptops. It used to be very difficult to communicate other persons that time. Earlier, journalists used to be more dedicated and energetic. Nowadays, people in journalism used to develop table story. They do lesser field work and has become lazy. Pawan Bali from CNN-IBN also spoke on the occasion. Later, question-answer session started where students asked different questions related to role media in India in general and in J&K in particular. Students of different schools colleges, institutions and university participated in large numbers. This event brought together varied professional from different fields like media, social work, administrative, politics, academic to a common platform and give students of Jammu an opportunity to interact with them. Raheel Khursheed, CM Seth, Harish Dutt, spoke on the green battle. The programme concluded with the speech by the Director, SIMC.
