Tabasum Guru’s mercy petition a setback for separatists and Militants
10/4/2006 6:11:54 PM

Srinagar,October 4:-Militant groups and a section of separatists received a setback when Tabasum Guru, wife of Mohd.Afzal Guru, awaiting execution on charge of his involvement in terrorist strike on the parliament, filed a mercy petition to President,Dr A.P.J.Kalam,seeking clemency for her husband.
Tabasum, alongwith her seven year old son,Ghalib, have travelled to Delhi for submitting the mercy petition to the President of India. She did it to secure life of her husband when Hizbul Mujahideen,Syed Ali Shah Geelani, and leaders belonging to Muslim League and Dukhtarani Milat, had campaigned against filing any mercy petition. These separatists wanted Mohd.Afzal Guru to die as a martyr.
The way Tabasum ignored the advice from the separatists has seemingly cast a shadow on the camp of those opposing any mercy appeal to the President of India. For Tabasum survival of Mohd.Afzal Guru was more important than the cause for which he had got involved with those who had targeted their guns on the security officials guarding the Parliament.
Filing of the mercy petition by Tabasum has indicated that writ of separatists does not run in all spheres of activity in Kashmir. Pro-Guru protest demonstrations by people were spontaneous and separatists started cashing on the peoples’mood by projecting Mohd.Afzal Guru as a hero of the ongoing Jehad. In fact Tabasum has sided with those millions of people and groups of political leaders, intellectuals and human rights activists who have been campaigning for clemency to Guru. And if the mercy petition was accepted Hizbul Mujahideen and those separatists, who were against filing of any mercy petition, were likely to lose their face.
