| Gujjar stage protest at Raj Bhavan, allege exploitation of tribe by elite | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 9- Jammu and Kashmir Gujjar United Front staged a protest dharna in front of Governor House on the opening of the move offices here today against what’ it called exploitation, deprivation and victimization at the hands of successive State and Central Governments’. Led by Anwar Choudhary president, J&K Gujjar United Front, the protesting Gujjars were raising slogans in support of their demands. Speaking on the occasion, Anwar Choudhary alleged discrimination with the community in every walk of life from past many years. He alleged that constitutionally guaranteed rights have been denied to the community, Scheduled Tribe status was granted about 19 years ago but the same has not been allowed to be implemented on the ground, besides no political reservation has been granted so far and employees of Scheduled Tribe in the State have been deprived of the benefit of this status either by issuing different SROs or by ignoring the rules and regulations in this regard. He further alleged that representatives of 25 lakh Gujjars have never been taken into confidence in any decision by the Government and lashed out the present state government for not implementing Schedule Tribe status in the state. Senior women Gujjar leader begum Noor Jahan Choudhary alleged that Social Welfare Department and Directorate of Tribals have completely failed to come up to the expectations of poor student and old pensioners. The Gujjars are demanding representation in any talks with regard to the solution of Kashmir problem, creation of separate Gujjar regiment in the Army, opening of Gujjar cultural centre and inclusion of Gojri language in the 8th schedule of Constitution of India, Out of Rs.43, 000 crore and other additional funds sanctioned for the state, 10 per cent share should be kept separate for the development of Scheduled Tribe of the State. The Front is also demanding permanent settlement by providing all the basic requirements, political reservation in Parliament and state legislature and all other local bodies, starting of Gojri bulletin from AIR, DD New-Delhi, Jammu and Srinagar. The Front submitted a detailed memorandum to the Governor’s office.
